Threaten Me With Heaven

Threaten Me With Heaven

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4 (NKJV)

I heard a song the other day by Vince Gill by the title of, "Threaten me with Heaven."  As I thought about the lyrics I couldn't help but think about how the enemy robs us of the joy God intends for us to have.  I am not just speaking of joy for when everything is going good in our lives, but even for the times when we are going through the fiery trials of fighting for our very lives.

Many times I have prayed with those who have been given the bad news from their doctor of cancer or something else life threatening in their body.  I have prayed with those who have received this news about someone they love as well.   I have seen the pain in their heart as they can often look at this news as an imminent death sentence.

Q:    We are told to count it all joy when we fall into various trials, but how do we do this when facing such terrible news?

For us who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we can do this because we know we are going to live eternallywe know this is not the end.  We have a blessed hope in Christ coming back, but if we die prior to His coming we can know with all assurance we will be with Him in Heaven.  So in essence, if we were to receive the news of a potential terminal illness it would be like being threatened with going to heaven.

We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8 (NKJV)

I have personally experienced all the things associated with losing a loved onethe hurt and pain, the loss of their companionship, and I am sensitive to anyone who has felt this or is currently experiencing this.  I felt compelled to write something to focus on the biblical truth of where we as believers will be when we do die physically.  I felt compelled to do this because we can find comfort and joy in this truth, as we know with all confidence we will soon be reunited with our loved ones in the Lord and we will have all eternity to spend together.

I know I have a relationship with Jesus.  So if the enemy comes to me and tempts me to fear death, then I should view this as simply being threatened with going to Heaven. When I think of it this way it definitely brings back the Joy because of the hope I have in Jesus and eternity.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 2 Corinthians 5:8, what happens when we die?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you being robbed of your joy as you are being tempted by the enemy to fear death?

APPLICATION: Keep your eyes fixed upon the truth of God's Word.  Know with all certainty what will happen when you pass from this life into eternal life.

Father, thank You for the comfort of Your Word.  Thank You for restoring my joy knowing where I will be when I leave this temporary body.  Father, help me to remember this truth when the enemy tempts me to fear dying, or to lose my joy when I lose loved ones.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...
