Road ID
Identity Crisis

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26 (NKJV)

I love receiving UPS packages.  I think it stems from all the years when I was racing motorcycles.  Every day the big brown truck would pull up it meant I had something new to bolt on to my race bike.  Well I don't race motorcycles anymore but the big brown truck still comes by every once in a while and I still get all happy like a puppy chasing a fire truck.

Today I came home to find a package on my front porch.  It was a Road ID bracelet I had ordered for when I ride my bicycles.  The concept is simple - if you were to be involved in an accident and were rendered unconscious then medical staff could determine valuable information about you, such as your identification, blood type, allergies to medicines, emergency contact and much more.   So I tore open the box to find my bracelet and I placed it on my wrist.   This would now be how others would identify me.

As I thought about it I couldn't help to think about how God had come up with the original Road ID thousands of years ago.  He sent the Holy Spirit into the world as a helper and a witness to those who would travel many dangerous roads.  If the enemy ever tried to come against us to bring accusation of our past sins, the Holy Spirit would bring His testimony about our true identification by saying, , "This one belongs to Me - He is God's child, and innocent" (Rom. 8:16).

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Romans 8:16 (NKJV)

Q:    How should knowing the truth of our identity affect us as Christian men and women?

It should give us great confidence and help us to understand why we are being bombarded with lies (Eph. 6:16).  It should help us to dispel these lies and strengthen our resolve to spend time in the Word of God so we can continue being transformed and know the perfect will of God for our lives (Rom. 12:1-2).

If Satan can get us to believe his lies as to whom we really are, then he can manipulate us into believing his lies about our self-worth,our abilities, and even our salvation.  When this happens we can suffer from an identity crisis and a type of spiritual dementia - getting all turned around between God's truth and Satan's lies - our eyes are now off of Jesus and back on the very things causing us to be distracted.

I want to encourage you today to ask yourself, "Who am I?"  If you come up with any other description other than a child of God, then please know your true identity is being diminished or shifted out of its proper place.  There is nothing greater than our identity in Christ - no job, no ability, nor any title should ever gain greater honor or glory.  You are a child of God - this is your ultimate Road ID.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what could we learn with respect to our identity in Christ?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What are you most identified with?

APPLICATION: Continue to focus on God's truth contained within His Word.  Never be swayed or attempt to be identified with any other occupation or title above being God's child.

Father, thank You for allowing me to be Your child, and to have a relationship with You.  Father, help me to remember my primary identity every day so I can walk in this truth.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
