Truth in Love

Truth in Love

For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. Romans 1:26-27 (NKJV)

We have seen a surge in the political arena of late to push homosexual rights to the forefront. These new proposed laws are being written with the alleged goal of stopping the discrimination and hate of those who adhere to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lifestyle.  One such proposed law in California seeks to promote these lifestyles in a positive light and to do so they would mandate the change of school textbooks to reflect the history and positive impact of people who were gay.

Many of those who are promoting these new proposed laws are advocating those who practice these lifestyles should be viewed as a minority group - thereby better protecting them from many of the hate crimes usually associated with bigotry and stereotyping.

I am all for fairness and doing what is best for a person, and I am equally committed to allowing people to make their own decisions unless these decisions are potentially harmful to others.  I do not believe it is God's desire for us to hate people - even when they don't make the same choices we choose to make.  In fact, I believe we as Christian men and women, have been called to love our neighbor as we love ourselves (Lev. 19:18; Matt. 19:19).  But in acknowledging this biblical truth we must also ask ourselves this question.

Q:    What type of love is God referring to when He commands us to love others as ourselves?

The answer to this question is Agape love - it is a type of love willing to do whatever is best for the person being loved - regardless of what it cost.

More and more it is becoming considered as "hateful" to speak out against any sort of gay lifestyle; this includes speaking forth the Word of God, which strictly forbids it.  Soon those who choose to speak God's truth in love will face persecution both socially and legally.  Even so as Christian men and women we must be biblically clear on this issue.

Q:    So what does God's Word have to say with regard to homosexuality?

  • God has clearly stated Homosexuality is an abomination (Lev. 20:13) to Him.
  • God has clearly stated how mankind has come to live a homosexual lifestyle (Rom. 1:18-32).
  • God has clearly stated there will be severe consequences for living this way (Lev. 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9-10).

Ultimately every Christian will be given a choice as to whether he or she will speak up for what they know to be right, or whether they will remain silent.  God gave strong warnings about not speaking up, as recorded in His conversation with the prophet Ezekiel.

When I say to the wicked, You shall surely die, and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Ezekiel 3:18 (NKJV)

We must remember though it is not our right to judge another human being unto condemnation - only God can do this.   We are however to make judgments as to whether something is right or wrong by using God's Word as our standard.   We should always care enough to share the love of Christ with those who are living in sin.

Make no mistake; it will be our kindness leading others to repentance just as it was God's kindness leading us in ours.  When others know how much we care for them they will be more apt to hear our heart and allow us to share God's amazing grace and truth with them.

Homosexuality is no greater sin than adultery, fornication or gossip for that matter, but we should never become so apathetic we become complacent with these sinful lifestyles.   We should never stop sharing God's truth and fighting for what is truly righteous, nor should we stand back silently as laws are passed mandating new school textbooks be printed - teaching our children this is an acceptable, positive and good way to live.  God says it is not and this should be our position.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Ezekiel 3:18 what was God's view for Ezekiel not warning others of their sinful lifestyle?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to share God's truth in love with those around you whether it is homosexuality, fornication, adultery, or gossip within their life?

APPLICATION: Seek to share God's truth in love with those who you see in sin.  This is love in action.

Father, thank You for sharing Your love and truth with me.  Thank You for correcting me in those ways where I have been wrong.  Help me to see Your truth today and to share it with others.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
