It's Your Kindness Lord

Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? Romans 2:4 (NKJV)

I remember when I was a teenager out cruising my car on E Street in San Bernardino.  It was definitely the place to go and hang out.  I was allowed to stay out until midnight, but not a minute longer.  I would always take full advantage of every minute but would always make it home in time.  The last thing I wanted to do was be late.

I remember one night I decided to take one more cruise before going home.  I jumped into a buddy's car with a few other people and we ended up getting pulled over by the police for a burned out taillight.  This time there was no way I was going to make it home in time.  I had two options, I could be late or I could drive real fast.  I opted for the latter but still came up short.

I remember the fear of punishment, but mostly it was having to face my father after letting him down on my commitment.  As I pulled into the driveway he was just coming out of the house as he was heading off to work.  As I exited the car he looked at me and smiled and simply said, "Hi."  He knew I was late, but he didn't say a word about it.

I don't think I will ever forget his response, nor do I think there could have been any better response by him to impact my future decisions.  It was his kindness ultimately leading to me to repent of my actions and I would never be late again.

As I think upon this I can't help but think about what a beautiful and perfectly true picture this is of our Lord and Savior.  He doesn't sit and wait for us like an angry parent - ready to beat us down or ridicule our behavior.  He waits patiently with the loving arms a father has for a child, eager to hug him.  Knowing and believing in God's infinite love and unfailing forgiveness will only cause us to run as fast as we possibly can back to Him.

Unfortunately because we don't have the capacity to continuously forgive those who have offended us - those who deserve to be punished - we can sometimes feel as though God would not forgive us.  But this is not what His Word teaches us.  When we read, acknowledge and believe this truth we will eventually act in accordance.

We serve a mighty and loving God.  We have been fearfully and wonderfully made.  And despite the failures God sees in the depths of our heart, He loves us the same.

For His merciful kindness is great toward us, And the truth of the LORD endures forever.  Praise the LORD! Psalms 117:2 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today to be encouraged even if you have fallen short.  God will be there to welcome you and to forgive you each and every time you turn back to Him.  When you ponder this type of love you will find yourself encouraged and desire to live for such a loving God.  Can you imagine the smile upon His face when we finally give those sinful habits over to Him and allow His strength to change our lifestyle?  He loves us this much.  Give it a shot - you'll be blessed beyond measure.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Romans 2:4 what should lead us to repentance?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you found yourself fearing God's wrath because of something you have done and as a result you have neglected to talk to Him regularly?

APPLICATION:  Don't let your past actions keep you from having a relationship with God.  Determine today to acknowledge Gods truth about His love for you.

Father, it is your loving kindness that leads me to repentance, and I want to thank You for it.  I know I don't deserve it, and this is why it is called grace.  So thank You very much, I love You.  Help me to remember this when I stumble,  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
