Eternal Investment

Eternal Investment
Time Well Spent

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Colossians 3:2 (NKJV)

I was driving home from Central California recently and as I was passing by a very popular cemetery in the Hollywood Hills area the billboard read, "Timeless Beauty. Eternal value."  As I continued down the road I begin to think upon this statement.  The marketing group or individual had made a pretty profound statement - one with about as much substance as a large serving of cotton candy.

It's not my heart to be cynical but I wondered how a grave-site in the hills of Hollywood - or anywhere for that matter - could have any real eternal value.  I guess if you believed when you died you would then spend eternity in the setting of their perfectly manicured graveyard then you could attempt to argue there would be a value to spending it there.  Unfortunately this is neither biblical nor truthful, because every place of burial is just a staging ground to hold the remains of our earthly body until it is resurrected.  We see this being stated in the Book of 1Thessalonians.

But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 1Thessalonians 4:13, 16-17 (NKJV)

Q:    So is there really any eternal value in being buried in one place verses another?

Well, according to Jesus we shouldn't be investing in treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but we should be laying up for ourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matt. 6:19-21).  So no matter how elaborate or expensive our burial site is there is really no eternal value to it.

Q:    So how can we properly invest into our eternity?

We can do it by living our life wholly devoted to God.  When we invest our earthly life into living for God we can do so knowing we will be yielding great eternal rewards.  Our time here on earth is a lot like our money - we can spend it frivolously now for temporary enjoyment or we can invest it into our future.  It's our choice today how we answer this question, "Do I spend my day on myself or invest it into the Kingdom of God?"

STUDY QUESTION: According to Colossians 3:2 what should we be setting our minds upon?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What are your goals today?  Are you willing to do everything as if you were doing it for God and allow Him to use you mightily?

APPLICATION: Seek the Lord in prayer ask Him what He wants to do through you today in your work place and in your home.

Father, Thank You for investing into my eternity by allowing Your Son to die for me upon the cross of Calvary.  Help me to be used for kingdom purposes today Lord.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
