A Tsunami of Joy
Being Covered in a Positive Wave

For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? 1 Thessalonians 2:19 (NKJV)

I was recently watching some videos of the tsunami created from the great 9.0 earthquake in Japan.  It was truly sad to watch waves come ashore and cover what was once thriving and productive communities.  Thousands of people lost their lives and over 125,000 buildings were destroyed or severely damaged.

As I was thinking upon the massive destruction caused by the tsunami I began to think about how the world would be positively affected if there were a tsunami of joy generated by the Christian community.  I began to think about how the evil of the world would be covered in an instant - much like the surface of Japan when the waves came ashore.

As I thought about this I was reminded how we are told in God's Word about the joy we should be experiencing and showing within our lives as Christian believers.  I thought about how this tsunami of joy was actually a biblical command.  We are told joy is a fruit of the Spirit.  This means those who walk in the Spirit will be filled with Joy (Gal. 5:22).  And we are told in the Psalms to Shout for Joy.

But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. Psalms 5:11 (NKJV)

The way I see it our joy should not be based upon our circumstances or position in life - it should be founded in the promises of God and our relationship with Him.  When we keep our minds fixed upon the things of God - such as His Word and His will for our life - we will continue to keep everything in an eternal perspective rather than a temporal one.  When we see things in the proper bigger picture we will always remember our Lord is on the throne and in control, and the difficulties we are experiencing are simply shaping and preparing us for our future. The fact is joy is actually the fuel God has given to us for our Christian walk.

Then he said to them, "...Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today to focus on your eternal destiny.  Focus on what God has already done for you, and on what He is doing for you.  Let's choose to find our joy in Him alone and we will be strengthened to face every challenge with a proper perspective.  Let's do our part of generating a tsunami of joy throughout our world.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn about Joy?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you filled with joy or has the enemy tempted you to be anxious because you are focusing on the world rather than God?

APPLICATION: Choose to focus on the Lord and on all He has done for you and is doing.  Seek Him daily and spend time with Him.  As you get to know Him intimately you will be filled with joy and it will be your strength.

Thank You Father for the joy You have given me.  I am sorry for those times where I have doubted because of the things I have seen or thought upon.  Help me to remember all You have done for me and are doing when the enemy comes to attempt to steal my joy.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
