I Belong Therefore I Serve

I Belong, Therefore I Serve

For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, Acts 27:23 (NKJV)

Have you ever found yourself at a large gathering with so many people that you don't know many of them.  Can you imagine having this happen at a family function?  I know it sounds funny to even imagine but I see this at church almost every Sunday as the family of God gathers to worship the Lord.   When the service is over people gather outside and the children run and play with each other.  I always get a kick when I hear a parent asking their child's new friend,  Who do you belong to?  In other words, who are your parents?

Actually every one of us as Christian men and women should identify with who we belong to if we are going to serve our Lord with a proper heart.  We can see the Apostle Paul identifying with how he himself belonged to God and therefore served Him (Acts 27:23).  As we focus on the truth of our being bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus we can easily conclude how we too, belong to Him, and therefore we should be willing to be a servant of God.

Q:    What does it mean to be a servant of the God?

It simply means we are willing to imitate Jesus and choose to serve others as if we are doing it for God (Col. 3:17, 23), because this is whom we should be doing it for.  It is important for us to have a proper heart when we choose to serve others and give to them what has been given to us by God.

So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NKJV)

The word, "cheerful" used in 2 Corinthians 9:7 is translated from the Greek word, "hilaros," hil-ar-os, which means,
"hilarious."  So when we belong to God we should be serving and giving with a cheerful or hilarious heart - a heart filled with happiness.  This is how God gives to us.  As we read our Bibles we learn this about God's nature and heart and we learn of His amazing grace, love and mercy.  When we begin to understand these truths we can be blown away at His willingness to want to have a relationship with us and in return we will find ourselves wanting to have a deeper relationship with Him and to serve Him with a proper heart.  Just think about how easy it is to do something for someone you love and care about deeply.

I want to encourage you today to think about how much God loves you and what He has planned for your life.  You belong to Him, and His love flows like the Niagara Falls - cascading upon all who will receive it.  Will you allow His love to flow through you as you serve others in the same way Jesus served?

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what could we learn about serving others?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you serving others as if you were serving Jesus?  Are you doing it with a hilarious heart?

APPLICATION: Think about the potential opportunities today to serve others.  Seek the Lord's guidance in which opportunities He would want you to be a part of.  Now choose to do it with a hilarious heart as unto the Lord.

Father, thank You for giving me a proper perspective of how I should serve others.  Forgive me for those times where I served with improper and selfish motives.  Help me to see the opportunities You have for me today.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
