Sowing and Reaping

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:7-9 (NKJV)

It is a simple truth - when we plant a corn seed a corn stock will eventually come forth.  Maybe not in the first hour, day, or even week, but eventually a little white sprout pops out.  It will interact with the elements of air and it will turn green and it will shoot upward towards the sky until it accomplishes what it was created for.   And when the ears of corn are fully matured, the plant has now yielded what was in the tiny seed.  We can see this same application with virtually everything planted.

This principle of sowing and reaping applies to the negative thoughts within our mind, as these seeds of discourse will eventually bring forth their own fruit. If thought upon too long corresponding actions will follow these improper thoughts.  It can start with our attitude or countenance changing, and if not dealt with our actions will follow.  The enemy will lie to us - tempting us to believe we can keep these sinful actions hidden, but God's Word tells us differently.  We can see Moses warning the Israelites to repent of their sin or it would be exposed.

But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out. Numbers 32:23 (NKJV)

We see this exposing occurring every day in the lives of people we know.  An adulterer or fornicator is exposed when a pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease occurs.  The same holds true when someone overdoses on drugs or gets picked up on a D.U.I.  Many will get away with it for a while but eventually their sin will in deed find them out.

We need to understand how much God loves us and is committed to us.  He will protect us but He will also allow us to experience the pain and consequences of our own decisions so we can feel the sting of sin and give a testimony of warning to others.  He will meet us where we are at and free us from the bondage of the enemy's stronghold in our lives so we can be reconciled to Him and give a testimony of His love to others.

We have the choice to sow the "good seed" as well.  We do this by reading the Word of God, and sharing the gospel message.  We can sow the love God has brought into our life with others, and we can sow by simply choosing to live a righteous life.  And just as it is with any seed we will eventually see the harvest of what we have sown.  It all starts with the seeds of thought and this is why it is so important to take captive every thought and to get rid of the weed seeds popping into our minds (2 Cor. 10:5).

I want to encourage you today to guard your thoughts.  Get rid of the junk and meditate on something good (Phil. 4:8).

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures in this devotional what can we learn about sowing and reaping?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you seen in your life or the lives around you where unconfessed, unrepentant sin eventually exposes itself?

APPLICATION: Take every thought captive and decide to sow good seed today.

Father, thank You for giving me this lesson.  I pray You would lead me in planting good seed in the lives of my family, my friends, my brothers and sisters in Christ and those who I might meet for the first time even today.  In Jesus' precious name, Amen...
