Be Still
And Know That I Am God

Be still, and know that I am God; Psalms 46:10 (NKJV)

I don't know about you, but being still isn't always the easiest thing to do for me.   I can recall many times in my past life before Christ where this wisdom would have served me well.  Unfortunately, I was more like Peter and my tongue was as sharp as his sword, I slashed away at many an ear with verbal attacks.  I am sure the damage was much more than just a lost ear.  I know better now because I understand the nature of the enemy and of my Lord.   I have learned from the Word of God about the impending attacks to come because of my choice to follow Jesus.

Remember the word that I said to you, "A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also." John 15:20 (NKJV)

I think we must understand the attacks we will face will not just be isolated to our Christianity, but will include attacks on our character and integrity.  It can be an accusation of something we allegedly said, and this in turn can trigger a natural reflex to respond in kind.  I call this "reflex sin."  I am sure you can relate to this within your life as well.  Can you remember just blurting something out of your mouth before you could check it at the gate of your lips?  It could have been a derogatory statement because someone cut you off in your car, or perhaps you said something about someone else at work because you heard they said something about you.

Q:    How can we get rid of the anxiety welling up from within when we feel our character, or integrity is being attacked, or we are being persecuted for our strong convictions in our Christian walk?

We need to be still and wait upon the Lord, and know He will guide us.  He will defend us and exalt us when we are persecuted wrongfully, especially when it is because of our belief in Him.  I truly think all attacks are because of this ultimately because Satan - the father of lies - wants to break down our witness and he will bring accusation against us falsely, hoping we take the bate and retaliate in an unloving way.

I want to encourage you to remember two things.  First, Jesus has promised to give us a mouth and wisdom our adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist (Luke 21:15).  And secondly, He made it abundantly clear if anyone is attacking one of His followers, they are actually attacking Him (Acts. 9:7).  God will defend us - we just need to have faith and be still and allow Him to defend us.  We can't be like Peter jumping up and taking out our sword and lopping off people's ears.  And we definitely need to hold our tongues. God is going to handle each situation carefully and perfectly and in just the right time.

STUDY QUESTION: What does God ask of us in Psalm 46:10?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Are you willing to be still and let God defend you next time you are attacked?

APPLICATION: Trust God in every situation, and know He will defend you and expose the truth as you seek the shelter of His protection.

Father, thank You for teaching me Your Word and Your ways.  I confess I have fallen and defended myself when others have attacked.  I place my trust in You today and ask for You to be my "soul" defender.  Help me to see Satan's deceiving ways when I am being wrongly accused and give me the peace I need to walk through these times.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...
