In Memory of Jesus
Celebrating Memorial Day

They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, And shall sing of Your righteousness. Psalms 145:7(NKJV)

I was driving westbound on Interstate 10 a couple of days ago and the traffic was flowing smoothly.  On the eastbound side things were not so good, as traffic was gridlocked.  It was Friday so some traffic was definitely normal but there was another factor at play - it was Memorial weekend.  This meant hundreds of thousands of people would be partaking in a mass exodus of their homes and communities in an attempt to celebrate this holiday at various locations.

I love Memorial Day.  I love what it stands for.  It is a time for us to stop, remember and pay tribute to those who have fought valiantly to provide our freedom.    Many men and women have paid the ultimate price in dying so we can be free.  I wonder how many will celebrate without even understanding what they are celebrating for.  I wonder how many have counted the cost for their freedom.

I can find myself wondering the same thing when it comes to being saved.  When you think about it, we should be celebrating a spiritual memorial day each and every day of our lives as Christian believers.  Perhaps we should start our day remembering how Jesus Christ died upon the cross for us so we could be free - free from the bondage of sin.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)

I think it's sad when people don't stop to think about the freedoms they have been provided - both physically and spiritually.  They have come at a cost and they are anything but free.  As Christians we need to ask ourselves if we are experiencing the freedom Christ intended for us to have.

Q:    Am I living as if I have been freed from the bondage of sin, or am I returning to the bondage of sin?

I want to encourage you today as you celebrate this holiday to stop and think about what it means to be free.   I want to encourage you to walk in this freedom and to never take it for granted.  I want to encourage you to remember what Jesus has done for every one of us and what an amazing price He has paid on our behalf.  So when you celebrate Memorial Day and you are remembering all those who have fought and died for the freedom you are enjoying, remember Jesus.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Galatians 5:1, what are we to stand fast in, and what are we to avoid?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you walking in freedom in Christ?

APPLICATION: Seek the Lord today in prayer and tell Him thank You for your freedom.  Ask Him to give you the power to walk in this freedom and to keep from getting entangled into the bondage of sin again.

Father, Thank You for allowing Jesus to die upon the cross for me.  Jesus Thank You for freeing me from the bondage of sin.  Empower me today to walk in this freedom and give me the wisdom and discernment to make good choices.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
