The Responsibility of Being a Godly Parent
Loving them in His Truth

Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)

God has given us great counsel when it comes to raising our children.  We are told to "train" our children in the way he should go, and as a result, when they get older they will not depart from it. Many interpret this to mean we should raise our children in the way he or she is determined to go, and we should train them accordingly. In other words, if the child feels strong about doing some particular interest, then we should focus our training on this area - making them the best at this.  But this isn't what Scripture teaches us at all.

We are told within the Book of Proverbs, there are just two ways a child can go - the way of the wise and the righteous, or the way of the fool and the wicked.

Q:    So what is our responsibility according to God's Word with respect to the emphasis He has told us to teach our children?

God has clearly taught us we are to be teaching the Word to our children, because it is this truth to guide them.

And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NKJV)

I think most of us desire to have our kids love us or even be our friends, but if we are to love them in the way God loves us, we will do what is best for them.  Doing what is best requires our teaching them about who God is and what His Word teaches us.  Only through God's Word will our children be prepared to face their future properly.  In addition to teaching them about God's Word, we too are to be learning and abiding in His Word as their parents.  It is the best example of our true belief and it comes with a guaranteed reward to our children and us.

Observe and obey all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God. Deuteronomy 12:28 (NKJV)

We have an amazing amount of technological advancement since we were kids and things are significantly different.  After-school activities such as baseball, riding bicycles and playing outside - running and jumping - have been replaced with the children spending time on the computer and searching the Internet for entertainment.  We need to be aware of what they are doing at "ALL" times, because it doesn't take long for the devil and his emissaries to plant defiling seeds within a once innocent mind.

As parents we need to guard ourselves from allowing the Internet from becoming our children's caretaker.  We need to take the time to invest into our children while they are still young enough to be influenced to make good decisions.  And these decisions should be based upon God's Word instead of what the latest social trend dictates or worse yet, a distorted perversion.

The mind of a child is fertile ground and the enemy is constantly hydro seeding his filth and lies.  Satan's plan is simple - to kill, steal and destroy, but Jesus has come so we might have life, and life more abundantly (John 10:10).   So we would be blessed to seek God's Word and to invest into the most valuable resource available - one leading to life.

Hey Christian let's train our children in the Ways of the Lord - the way leading to eternal life.  We owe it to them.  Besides, God blessed us with them, what better way to show God how grateful we are for this treasure, than to seek Him for His help in raising them.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures in this devotional, what should we teach our children?  What benefit will it have on their life, as well as the lives of their descendants?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Are you willing to seek the Lord in every aspect of raising your child?  Are you willing to teach them the Word of God as the most important thing they could ever learn?

APPLICATION: Take time each day to spend time with your child, and read the Word of God with them.  You are planting seeds of truth, and you are showing them how much you love them.  This is an action of love and this will impact your child.

Father, thank You for the gift of my children.  Thank You for guiding me to lead them in Your ways.  Allow me to spend time with my grandchildren in the same way.  I pray for You to continue to open my childrens' eyes to Your will and to Your words so these things will be evident to them as a blessing.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
