A Distinction Between People
Divine Protection

"Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand.  And in that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the land. I will make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall be." Exodus 8:21-23 (NKJV)

As we read the story of God's deliverance of His people we learn a great lesson in His divine protection.   After suffering three consecutive plagues by the hand of God, Pharaoh was given an ultimatum; let God's people go or Egypt would suffer a fourth plague - this one consisting of flies. God had given Pharaoh three prior ultimatums where he reluctantly agreed only to change his mind.  As a result of Pharaoh's hard heart, the people suffered from three separate plagues - including water turning into blood, an inundation of frogs, and lice.  In each of the three previous plagues every person in the land suffered, both Hebrew and Egyptian.

Something was about to change with this fourth plague though as God was going to separate His people so they would not have to endure or suffer its affects.  Each plague had become successively worse and this one with flies would be harsh, as these particular flies were the type to feed on flesh.

He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them, Psalms 78:45 (NKJV)

So here you have millions of flies all throughout Egypt, but God was going to reveal His protection for His people and guard them against this plague they were to be set apart from all other people - sanctified.

As we read this story we can take great comfort in God's grace (unmerited favor) upon His people.  We, too, have this very same grace upon us as His Christian children - God spares us from many things the Devil would want to do to us. We see the prayer of Jesus to His Father for the protection of His followers as recorded in John 17:15.

I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.. John 17:15 (NKJV)

When we become a Christian we are "sanctified" by the blood of Jesus.  This means we are made holy to God and set apart, much like the children of Israel were.  We will still go through certain trials and tribulations like the unbeliever, but God's hand will be upon us, guiding us, and leading us through each specific test.  But just as it was in the case of the flies in Egypt, there will be many times we won't have to endure certain hardships as we will be separated and protected from them.

God made a distinction between His people and those who were not His during this plague, and He will always continue to do so.  He loves all people unconditionally, but He has a special place and provision for those who seek to know Him and accept His free gift of salvation.  Those are the ones called "Children of God" (John 1:12).

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 17:15, what specifically did Jesus pray for His followers?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Do you have that peace of mind of being sanctified, or set apart by God?

APPLICATION: Remember, when you go through trials, God is guiding you through them, and He is developing you in your faith, patience, perseverance, and character.  He will use these lessons to prepare you to help others and to be a comfort to them as they go through the same thing.

Father, thank You for sanctifying me and accepting me as Your child.  Thank You for making me a part of Your family.  Thank You in advance for protecting me and leading me through each situation I will face.  I love You and I praise You.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
