Choosing God's Playbook
Having The Perfect Play

"Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." Deuteronomy 11:18-19 (NKJV)

Have you ever noticed in a football game where the quarterback is in between plays in the huddle and they are looking to him for leadership and for the next play?  Sometimes he gets the play from a player who is sent to relay the play to the team.  Other times he looks to his wristband where he has a special list of plays he feels confident he can refer to for play calling.

My point is he is prepared for what is next, and is ready to have another specific play to call, depending on how successful the last play was or depending on what he may be facing.  It works like this in our Christian walk as well.  When we study the Word of God, we are actually learning our plays for the rest of our life.  As we read, pray about, and meditate upon God's Word we are being given great wisdom and it is being stored upon the hard-drive of our fleshly computer also known as our memory.

Now think of the Holy Spirit as the ultimate play caller.   He sits with the perfect vantage point and will whisper His thoughts (plays) into our head, giving us the perfect play for that specific moment.  He takes the Scriptures we have studied and He brings them forth out of our temporary memory files, and reminds us of what we need to do in each situation.  We see Jesus telling the first disciples about this as recorded in the Book of John.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13 (NKJV)

When you think about it, it almost seems like cheating having the Holy Spirit of God, (God in the Spirit-1/3 of the God-head) giving us the exact insight as to what to do, and exactly when to do it, as He knows the whole playbook of the enemy.

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to make it a habit to ready your playbook (the Bible).  Make it a habit of calling upon the Master play-maker for every wise play and know with confidence He will faithfully provide it. Don't wait until 4th down and long before you ask Him. The situation might not be as exciting, but that is the type of excitement that we don't need in our lives.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Deuteronomy 11:18-19, what does God tell us to do with His Word?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Have you found yourself in a 4th down and long situation, and not having a play to fall back upon?

APPLICATION:  Study God's Word, be prepared, and seek the Lord in every situation.  Don't wait until 4th down to call upon Him.

Father, thank You for Your Word.  Thank You for the perfect play when I call upon You.  I seek Your will for my life this day Lord.  Show me what You want me to know as I read Your Word, and as I meditate upon Your Word.  Continue to lead me in all aspects of my life so I may glorify Your Son.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
