Clean Because of The Word

Clean because of the Word
My Daily Dose

You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. John 15:3 (NKJV)

Q:    What does it mean to be clean because of the word?

A:    It is two-fold.  First, it means we have been regenerated (Saved) because we have received and believed the gospel message (Rom. 1:16).  Secondly, it means we will continued to be pruned and cleaned up by God's Word as we read it and apply it to our lives (Heb. 4:12).

For Christian believers it simply means this is God's way of continuing our transformation process.  We will never be perfect as long as we are in these earthly vessels (bodies), but we will constantly be changing from what we were into what we will eventually be, and this is to be "Perfect" like Jesus.  This perfection will not occur until we are absent from our mortal body and we are in His presence, but this doesn't mean God intends to wait until we die to start the work.  As a matter of fact, the process starts as soon as you accept Christ into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)

So, in the interim period - until we see Christ face to face - we have the Holy Spirit who lives inside us constantly changing us and guiding us into all understanding of God's Word (John 16:13).

Being clean because of the word refers to our abiding relationship with Jesus (John 15), through the reading of His Word.

Q:    Why is it so important for us to read the Bible daily?

A:    As we read His Word - The Bible - The Holy Spirit chips away the rough edges within our lives - those bad habits - the incorrect thoughts and actions we have become accustomed to doing.

Think of yourselves as an individual Mt. Rushmore being fashioned by The Master Craftsman's perfect hands in accordance with His perfect plan.

  • There will be times when He uses dynamite to take off a larger unwanted chunk of bad stuff.  We can find it very uncomfortable during these times.  But trust Him, because He knows what He is doing.
  • There will be times when He uses a jackhammer to take off smaller stuff within our life -  stuff hindering our walk and relationship with Him.  It can be those things we value more than Him, or we have given a greater priority to in our life.
  • There will be times when He uses a small chisel to refine us in areas where we have mostly surrendered our life, but we still are hanging on to stuff because of selfishness, pride, or stubbornness.

Being cleaned through the word not only entails things such as reading the Word, attending Bible study and fellowshipping with others, but it also means we need to apply what we are studying.  We see this truth plainly stated in Psalm 119.

How can a young man cleanse his way?  By taking heed according to Your word. Psalms 119:9 (NKJV)

And Paul speaks of this cleansing process in chapter 5 of the book of Ephesians while talking of husbands and wives; as he speaks of the bride being washed by the water of the word.  Having God's word as the basis of our beliefs, and having it in every aspect of our decision-making process will inevitably cause us to be changed.  And as this happens in our life, we become the witness God intended.  Not just by our words, but more importantly by our actions.

We've spoken before about how fruit comes from the fruit tree naturally as it hangs on the branch, and this is the same process for us as we hang onto God, and abide in Him, and He in us.  If you're wanting to live for Christ, but you can't figure out how to do it, I want to encourage you to just start by reading His word and begin to talk to Him.  Let Him do the changing, because it is natural and it is from Him - not conceived or manifested from anything of our own doing.  This is what it means to be clean because of the word.

STUDY QUESTION: How are we clean because of the word?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Are you willing to allow God to clean you?  Are you willing to give back a small portion of your day and study the Word?

APPLICATION:  Make a commitment today, just as you would in a diet, or physical exercise, or any activity you enjoy, by spending time with Jesus, studying His word and talking (praying) with Him.

Father, thank You for cleaning me up as I study Your word and spend time in Your presence.  Continue Your transformation in my life Lord.  I love You...In Jesus' precious name, amen...
