Unplugged-Losing The Power
Part II

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

In Part 1 of this devotion we looked at how having the Holy Spirit within us is different than the Holy Spirit coming "upon" us (See Acts 1:8).  When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we are given God's power through the Holy Spirit to do various tasks, but this power can be lost, relegating us as ineffective.  We began to look at 7 ways this can happen -  the first 3 ways we looked at were;

1.     The power of the Holy Spirit is lost in our lives when we as believers go back on our separation to Him.
2.     The power of the Holy Spirit is lost in our lives when we as believers participate in sin.
3.     The power of the Holy Spirit is lost in the believer's life through Self-Indulgence.

Let's take a look at our fourth way to lose the Power of the Holy Spirit

4.     The Power of the Holy Spirit is lost within the believer's life through the greed for money.

One need only look to the example of Judas Iscariot.  The love of money filled his heart and consumed it.  This was a man who walked with, and had broken bread with the Savior of the World - but he sold his salvation for 30 pieces of silver - a temptation that could have been conquered with the power given to every believer.

Money isn't evil, but the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Tim. 6:10).  And one of the greatest evils the love of money brings about is the loss of the power of the Holy Spirit within the life of the believer.  How many men once possessed Spiritual power until a love for money took over their heart's desire?  Perhaps they acquired it honestly, but it then becomes their first love, and replaced what once rightfully belongs to God.  It can be the same for poor people who covet wealth; the end result for both is a loss of spiritual power.

5.    The power of the Holy Spirit is lost within the believer's life through Pride.

Pride is possibly the sneakiest of the seven categories, but it is also probably the most dangerous.  Virtually every sin known to man comes through the lust of the flesh; the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, as they are all of this world (1 John 2:16).  And the only way to keep from fulfilling the lust of the flesh is when we walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16).  We can't do that if we lose the Spirit's power.

I am sure that more men lose their spiritual power through pride than through any other sin mentioned. As they become puffed up in their own abilities and possessions. Unfortunately, God cannot use him with this attitude and perspective and He is put off to the side.

6.    The Power of the Holy Spirit is lost within the believer's life through the neglect of prayer.

When the little bunny on the battery commercial runs out of power he must get recharged.  It is the same with us when it comes to the divine energy needed to be Christians.  We receive our Spiritual charging when we come in contact with God through prayer.   There have been many men who have been used mightily, only to neglect their prayer life and subsequently they have lost the power of the Holy Spirit in their walk.  Okay, let's look at the 7th way to lose the power of the Holy Spirit.

7.    The power of the Holy Spirit is lost through our neglect of reading and studying the Word.

God's power comes through prayer and it comes also through His Word.  We know His word is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Heb. 4:12). We also know that God's Word is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction so the man of God may be "complete", thoroughly equipped for every good work.  Now that's power.

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to keep a checklist of these 7 areas that can cause every believer to lose the Power of the Holy Spirit and check them frequently.  They are easy to fix as we submit to God in every situation and make Him the Lord of our Life, replacing our desires and will for His.

STUDY QUESTION: List the 4 ways to Lose the Power of the Holy Spirit listed in this devotional.

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you seen any of these in your life during your walk as a Christian?

APPLICATION: Don't let Satan unplug you and render you powerless.  Keep the gift that Jesus promised to give to us, and keep the power to do things not possible in the flesh.

Father, search my heart for any area where I need to confess and submit to You.  Restore Your Power of Your Spirit within my life today so that I may glorify Your Son, for it is in His name that I ask this, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
