Christian Responsibilities-Part 3
Do The Work Of An Evangelist

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, Ephesians 4:11 (NKJV)

We are looking at a devotional series titled Christian Responsibilities, where we are breaking down 2 Timothy 4:5, which lays out 4-responsibilities for every Christian man and woman.  So far we have looked at our first two responsibilities, which are,

1.    We must be watchful in all things.
2.    We must endure afflictions.

Let's look at the third Christian responsibility contained within this Scripture.

3.    We must do the work of an evangelist.

But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist... 2 Timothy 4:5 (NKJV)

Q:    What is the work of an evangelist?

A:    It is to help unbelievers become aware of their sinfulness and their being lost because of sin in their lives (Rom 3:23).  We must point them to the only one who can redeem them from being lost and is the only way to come to God (Rom. 3:24-26; John 14:6).

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6 (NKJV)

I remember when I first started to share the Gospel message with others; I would talk myself blue in the face trying to convince them they needed Jesus.  I think some of them said okay just to get me to shut up.  Some may have prayed with me to add a little Christian fire insurance -  wanting to make sure they were okay with God.  Enthusiasm on our part when sharing the Gospel message is great, but it is important we don't manipulate people into saying they believe, or into saying a prayer to be saved.  When we do this we may be hindering them because their belief must be genuine and sincere.

Another thing we should know about this verse in 2 Timothy; it isn't telling us to become an evangelist, but to do the work of an evangelist.  I should be willing to help a person by dressing their wounds when they are injured, but this does not mean I am required to be a doctor by profession.  It is the same way with evangelism.  We are all called to evangelize but we will not all become evangelists by trade.  God wants to use ordinary people to share the Gospel message (The Good News) of Jesus Christ.

We should remember, there are many people who will not, nor have they ever gone to church.  Therefore, they would never have otherwise heard the message of salvation had it not been except for a faithful, responsible Christian sharing with them.

In like manner, there are many people who have gone to church and have encountered a bad experience with someone and therefore they have made it their choice to abstain from any worshiping of God.  Again, our living in a Christ-like way along with our sharing the good news about the forgiveness of sin may be the path by which these people come to a saving relationship.

When we are faithful and obedient to God in our Christian walk - seeking to do His will - He will be faithful to bring people to us in our day-to-day activities; giving us many opportunities to share Jesus.  What a blessing it is to us as well, after all, we get to tell the greatest story of all time about God with others.

1Sometimes telling a story has as much effect on the teller as it does the listeners. Martin Buber, the Jewish philosopher, recalls: "My grandfather was lame. Once they asked him to tell a story about his teacher, and he related how his master used to hop and dance while he prayed. My grandfather rose as he spoke and was so swept away by his story that he himself began to hop and dance to show how the master had done. From that hour he was cured of his lameness." When we tell the story of our Master, we too experience His power.

Hey Christian, we are not responsible for other people's decisions - they are.  What we are responsible for is being obedient to God and for sharing the Good News with others.  Let's make it our goal today to allow God to bring someone into our lives who needs to hear this message.  Now let's be responsible in sharing it.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Jesus' words as recorded in John 14:6, how many ways are there to God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to be responsible in doing the work of an evangelist?

APPLICATION: Seek the Lord in prayer today.  Ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit and to enable you to speak boldly in love when sharing with others.

Father, Thank You for saving me.  Thank You for choosing me and for using me in the lives of others.  Thank You for Your empowerment of Your Holy Spirit within my life.  Fill me today and allow me to be used by You in sharing the message of the Cross.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
