Worshipping The Wrong God

Worshiping The Wrong God

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."  Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV)

I was in a parking lot one day when I noticed a Toyota Prius parked next to me and it had key marks down the side of it.  As I was looking at the car, I noticed it had quite a few stickers on it.  Most of the stickers were promoting variations of peace, including anti-war and classic peace logo variations.

On the back of the car were two similar looking stickers on opposite sides of the trunk lid.  One sticker read, "Mother Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth."  And the second sticker read, "Honor Mother Earth."

Let me just say this, I am all for diggin' on what God has so graciously given us in the way of this great and amazing planet.  In fact, every time I go and explore and see just a little bit more, I am blown away!  But I haven't started to worship this planet yet, nor do I plan on it. The fact is, when we worship anything other than God, whether it be the earth, or anything else for that matter, we have made it a false god.  I call these things, "lower-case g gods."

We, as human beings, can tend to really get into what we do for a living or recreation.  And for some, it doesn't stop at a deep passion but spills over into obsession and worship.  For some people it is the sun - they worship it, laying about and soaking it up - they can't seem to get enough.  For others it very well might be the moon and the stars - they worship them and will try to forecast their future and life based off of them; we see this in astrology and the Age of Aquarius.  And for others, like this Prius owner, it can be the earth - worshiping it and loving it in lieu of the One who created it.

You shall have no other gods before Me.  You shall not make for yourself a carved image any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, Exodus 20:3-5 (NKJV)

There is another thing I disagree about with the bumper sticker on the Prius saying, "Mother Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth," and it is this:

I don't belong to Mother earth!   I belong to God.

And as far as the other sticker saying, "Honor Mother Earth," I look at it this way.  If I were to honor God, then I would have no problem being a good steward of what He has given to me - and this includes this great and vast planet known as Earth.  So for me, to honor or respect the earth is a byproduct of honoring God.

There is such a great mixture of the various types of people in this world - not to mention their unique cultures and backgrounds.  We will naturally have different things we like to enjoy, and I believe this is the way it should be.  For those people who love this earth and the diversity of creation it holds, I would like to suggest something. The next time you see something that blows your mind, whether it be the beauty of a flower unfolding in the morning light, or the sun sinking into the ocean at dusk - know there is something bigger to be worshiped than what you are viewing. Try worshiping the Creator, not the creation.

Hey Christian, there is one more thing I would like to encourage you with.  If you love this planet and the things our Lord has created, then you are in for an unbelievable surprise one day.

But as it is written:  Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him. 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV)

Just another reason to worship God...

STUDY QUESTION: According to Exodus 20:3-5, what can we learn with regard to worshiping anything other than God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there anything in your life that you are worshiping, or putting more emphasis into, or loving than God?

APPLICATION: Don't allow yourself to put more emphasis into anything above God.  Don't worship anything other than God.  Don't love anything more than God. If you find yourself doing this, then repent and confess it for what it is - sin.

Father, Thank You for Your mercy, grace, and love.  Father, I am sorry for the times I have put more emphasis, time, energy, and love into other things rather than You.  I ask for forgiveness for this, and I ask for You to show me anything that might have too much of my heart.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...
