The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse
A Burning Flame Within

I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. John 12:46 (NKJV)

My wife Carol and I were on vacation, driving up the eastern seaboard between Connecticut and Maine. We were doing a self-tour of various lighthouses and we were blown away at the beauty and history behind each one.  There were people at each location doing the same thing and every person seemed to be equally intrigued.  Some of the lighthouses were functioning just as they did for hundreds of years, while others were no longer in use.

I thought about how these lighthouses, which were originally made to draw sailing vessels safely to the harbors were now also drawing the people on land to themselves as well.  I then thought how Jesus had done the same thing.  He was the light who came into the world to keep people from being in darkness, and to guide all who would be drawn unto Him.  The light Jesus provided was the very light brought forth from God to keep men from dying.  We see the Psalmist speaking of this saving light from God.

For You have delivered my soul from death.  Have You not kept my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the light of the living? Psalms 56:13 (NKJV)

We are told in Scripture that as believers of Jesus Christ we have become sons of God and also sons of light.

You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:5 (NKJV)

So, in this respect, we have become human lighthouses - capable of reflecting the light of Christ to those who would otherwise perish in the sea of sin and death.
For so the Lord has commanded us:  I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth. Acts 13:47 (NKJV)

It is important for us to know we can never manufacture light as it comes from God - He is light.  We are only capable of allowing God's light to shine through us as we live in a Christ-like way.

It is equally important for us to know we can also keep the light of God from shining within us by living in a way that grieves the Holy Spirit; by sinning.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:30-32 (NKJV)

So I guess some of the questions we must ask ourselves are these:

Q:    Do I want to be a functioning lighthouse for God?
Q:    Do I want to be used to draw others to the light of Jesus?
Q:    Do I want to be a vessel of honor in the Lord's hands?
Q:    Am I willing to live in a way causing the light to burn bright, or will I snuff it out with my foolish and selfish desires to live independently and willfully?

It amazes me that God would allow me to be used in such a way as being a lighthouse to those seeking safety.  I am not worthy in and of myself - it is only by God's amazing grace that I have been saved and forgiven and filled with His light.  I get to choose, as we all do, whom I will serve this day, and whether this lighthouse shines bright.  I choose to shine!

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to see if there is anything keeping the light from shining through you.  If there is, then get rid of it, and ask God to forgive you.  Let Him fill you with His light today and begin to draw people to Him.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to God's light?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you shining brightly with the light of Christ?

APPLICATION: Ask God if there is anything in your life you need to lay down and repent of.  If there is, then ask Him for His strength, mercy, and empowerment to walk in an abiding relationship with Him.

Father, Thank You for Your light within my life.  Thank You for allowing others to be drawn to You through me Lord.  All glory and honor to You.  Help me to identify with anything I need to lay at Your feet and to repent of today.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...
