When The Cap Fails

Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." John 4:10, 14 (NKJV)

What a tragedy it was when the BP Deepwater Horizon's offshore oil rig came crashing down in the Gulf of Mexico.  Mankind was immediately challenged beyond his limits when this high-pressured oil well defied containment and made its way to the surface to do its damage.  Millions upon millions of gallons of oil have made their way out of the heart of the earth, and are damaging the ocean, the shoreline, the marine life, the economy, and let's not forget the 11-lives lost in the initial explosion.  Safe to say, this is devastating.

Billions of dollars were spent to clean up the oil in the first 100-days alone.  Untold hours of labor were generated from 50,000 people hired by BP, including effort from more than 7,000 U.S. Gulf-based spill response vessels including skimming units.

It is always amazing to me how much effort is put into cleaning up a mess, rather than preventing one.  Just think about how much loss could have been avoided had a fraction of what has been put into the cleanup had been put into preventative measures. Obviously, oil containment is the overall plan because without it there will be continued spewing of oil, and untold defilement.

When I look at this disaster, I can't help but see the similarity of mechanics at work occurring daily within our lives.  Each one of us has our own personal Deepwater rig - or as I like to call it, our "Mouth."  Each one of us has some sort of capping system to control what comes out of our mouth - some better than others.   And each one of us at some point has a cap failure.  When this happens, those things deep within our heart come spewing forth.  And, much like the BP disaster, we too, are responsible for much devastation by those hurtful things we say with our tongues.

And just like the vast effort put forth into cleaning up the oil spill, we too, can end up putting a great amount of effort into cleaning up the mess we are responsible for by the things we have spoken. And, it won't matter how much how much effort we put into the cleanup if we cannot get the cap onto our mouth and begin to contain what is coming out.

There is something else for us to consider - we need to know there is a bigger issue than the capping of our mouths.  And if we are to truly control any future damage, we need to look at what we are attempting to keep from coming out.  You see, the only thing coming out of our mouth is what is already inside our heart.  Therein lies the real issue.

Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. Matthew 15:11, 18 (NKJV)

Q:    Rather than worry about any potential explosion occurring on the containment platform of our mouth, why not just replace the black goo within our heart, and refill the well within our heart with the living water of God's Word, with His ways, and His Holy Spirit?

Our mouth is not the problem it is just a tool.  It can speak forth life, or death.  It can heal, or it can hurt.  It can build up, or it can tear down.  The problem occurs when our hearts are bad - there is only one way to cleanup this type of spill, and it is by the blood of Jesus Christ.

  • Only Jesus can change our hearts from stone into flesh.
  • Only Jesus can heal the damage we have caused.
  • Only Jesus can fill our hearts with a fountain of living water.

This is what needs to be gushing forth lovingly out of our mouths.

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you today to talk with God.  Ask Him, "Lord, look into my heart.  Take away those evil things within me.  Change my heart into a heart like Yours.  Fill me with Your fountain of living water today.  Help me to understand the water of Your Word as I read and meditate upon it."

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 4:14, what is the result of our having the water provided by Jesus in our hearts?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you allowing God to fill your heart with the water of His Word daily?  What is mostly coming out of your mouth?

APPLICATION: Read the God's Word daily and be filled with the water of life.  Be filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18), and watch what begins to come out of the well of your heart.

Father, Thank You for changing my heart.  Thank You for filling me with Your Word, and with Your Spirit.  Fill me today with Your Spirit and help me to know Your ways as I read and meditate upon Your Word.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
