Ozzy And Gabe

Ozzy And Gabe
Getting Off The Crazy Train of This Life

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. Foolish one, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. 1Corinthians 15:22-23, 36 (NKJV)

If you had told me 30-years ago I'd be writing a Biblical devotional having anything to do with Ozzy Osbourne, I would have told you, "Your crazier than he is."  Well, flash-forward 30-years and a lot has changed - in me that is - Ozzy, I'm not so sure.

I was looking over some emails.  In one of the emails was a website to CBS for a related story, and within this website, was the headlines of yet another story stating, "Ozzy Osbourne's Genetic Code Being Mapped!"  It was too tempting not to check this one out - if for no other reason than, "Why?"  So I soldiered on.

Well, it turns out the answer to the "Why?" question was scientists were attempting to figure out how he survived decades of self-abuse through a lifestyle few would have survived. Ozzy admits he has abused his body with a daily regiment every sort of drug, including, cocaine, sniffing glue, and drinking over the last 41-years and has capped it off by breaking his neck in an ATV accident in 2003.

It turns out these scientist are thinking this former singer of a heavy metal band called Black Sabbath is some sort of "Medical miracle."  So the scientific community (Or at least part of them) want to see what, if anything, is different about Ozzy to keep him living with a lifestyle seemingly able to bring the strongest down to the grave.

Ironically, as I write this devotional, my wife Carol and I, along with our entire family is mourning the loss of our nephew, Gabriel.  At just 34-years of age, Gabriel was on the opposite end of the spectrum of Mr. Osbourne.  Instead of intentionally neglecting his body for pleasure, Gabe fought a lifelong battle to keep his going.  He was born with a renal (kidney) issue, which challenged him throughout his entire life.

But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body. 1Corinthians 15:38 (NKJV)

Gabe experienced an untold amount of painful surgeries, including kidney transplants and additional failures were the tests our Lord laid before him.  Ultimately, Gabe's body could no longer handle the heavy toll the dialysis treatments brought about to cleanse his blood 3-times every week - the result was a heart surgery followed by heart failure.

There will be no scientific investigation into Gabe's DNA makeup to see what was different about him like there will for Ozzy, and there will be no articles in the publications or on the Internet glorifying his lifestyle.

Some would look at these circumstances and conclude them to be unfair, or unjust - but this would not be true.  You see, God was in control the whole time throughout Gabe's struggles.  God allowed Gabe to face these challenges, and He knew what was best for Gabe's life.  Perhaps if he hadn't faced these challenges, he might have chosen the same destructive path as Ozzy, having no regard for the things of God, or for himself, but this was not the case.

Ultimately, God knows what is best for all of us.  God loves all of us equally - both, the Ozzys, and the Gabes of this world.  God has provided an amazing gift for each of us - we just need to receive it, and accept His Son's payment for our sin.  Gabe chose to receive this gift, and as such, he had a true understanding of what he faced when his body ultimately failed - knowing he would soon be face-to-face with God.  For Ozzy, only time will tell as to his decision of whether or not he would like a relationship with Jesus - the choice is his.

For those who read this and find themselves feeling as though Gabe may have received the short end of the stick with what he faced and the consequences he experienced verses what Ozzy received - I would like to share these truths.   Gabe is in the presence of God, and he has been given a new body (1Cor 15:40).  God loved him enough to bring him home early - knowing this path was best.  God loves Ozzy too, and is not willing for him to perish, but to have eternal life (2Peter 3:9).

Hey Christian, there will be accountability for each and every one of us, even though some feel as though they can live whatever lifestyle they choose with no consequences. God isn't blind; He is just very patient with us.

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 2Peter 3:9 (NKJV)

The cleansing of the blood through the dialysis machine may have lead to the death of Gabe's physical body, but it was the cleansing of the blood of Christ that has given him eternal life.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to the physical bodies we have been given?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you prepared to see Jesus face-to-face?  Is there something in your life you love more than God - something you have not repented of?

APPLICATION:  Seek the Lord today for forgiveness of anything you know to be wrong.  Seek to have a relationship with Him each and every day.  Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit every day to empower you to walk in His ways.

Father, Thank You for Your unfailing love and mercy upon my life.  Thank You for allowing Gabe to come home to You, and for ultimately healing him perfectly.  Thank You for the time we shared here on earth.  Help me to continue to see things in the way You want.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
