God Shed His Grace On Thee

God Shed His Grace On Thee

And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)

I recently received an email about a teacher in Southern California who had put up some posters in his classroom.  It so happened these posters offended some people and he was asked by the school board to take them down.  He was reluctant to do so, and the controversy still rages on as the matter is being taken to the District Court of Appeals to decide whether is okay to leave them up, or if they must be kept down.

So, what was so offensive to cause these people to go to this degree of effort to alleviate them?  Well, on one poster this was written:

  • One Nation under God
  • In God We Trust
  • God Shed His Grace on Thee

While on another poster, it read:

  • All me are created equal; they are endowed by their Creator

It is actually amazing as these statements are simply things written on our "currency," and contained within in our "Pledge of Allegiance," and the "Declaration of Independence." Most Presidents utilize one of them in almost every one of their speeches

Q:    Why do such statements cause such disunity, and controversy when displayed openly in a classroom?

A:    Because it has to do with the acceptance and belief in God.

Amazing as it may sound, this particular school district found Judeo Christian views to be just too offensive for the students to handle.  And yet, they don't find this to be true with other religions being promoted, or having anti-religious things being put up in the classrooms. Things such as,

  • Quotes from Hindu leader Mahatma Gandhi
  • Quotes from Muslim leader Malcolm X
  • Buddhist leader Dali Lama
  • Gay Pride
  • Stop Global Warming
  • Lyrics to John Lennon's "Imagine" there's no heaven

U.S. District Judge Roger T. Benitez has already ruled in favor of allowing the posters on God to stand, and made a interesting comment, stating,

"Ironically, while teachers encourage students to celebrate diversity and value thinking for one's self, defendants apparently fear their students are incapable of dealing with diverse view points that include Gods place in American history and culture."

Q:    So what does this have to do with us, as Christian men and women?

A:    It is just one example of what we are going to face in the way of opposition and persecution for openly sharing what we believe.  It means our world is becoming more tolerant of evil and intolerant of God, and the things of God (See Rom. 1:16-32; 1Tim. 4:1).

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Romans 1:20-22, 24-25 (NKJV)

Controversy about God and Jesus has always been, and will always be a part of human history.  Jesus spoke about this very thing in Matthew 10:32-40.

This particular situation with the school board may seem pretty obvious when it comes to denying God and Judeo Christian beliefs, but we don't have to insist in someone taking down a poster about God or some portion of the Declaration of Independence to deny Him, we can do it when we simply choose to live for our selfish desires, and the lust the flesh and of this world.

It's easy to become jaded to these types of attacks on Christianity, or to simply get discouraged when we see these types of emails, but I would caution us all to not become dissuaded in doing what is right.  There is so much we can do in this battle, and it starts one prayer at a time.

I want to encourage you today to continue to keep your eyes focused on God, and His will for your life - Let's not get distracted by the enemy.  Also, don't forget to pray for our elected officials continually.  You might not have elected them, but this shouldn't hinder God's command for us to pray for them (1Tim 2:1-2).  Don't underestimate the power of prayer (James 5:16).

STUDY QUESTION: What is the natural progression of people when they choose to deny God according to Romans 1:20-22, 24-25?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there anything created, such as a possession, a person, or a occupation, or activity which has a higher place of value than God in your life?

APPLICATION: Choose to make an active stand for what you believe to be true.  Pray for those officials who are serving in local and national government capacities.

Father, Thank You for Your Love and Mercy.  Thank You for Your longsuffering.  Help me to see the areas in my life where I am compromising and allowing the enemy to get a foothold.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
