I Cried Out!
Turning From False gods

"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  "You shall have no other gods before Me.  "You shall not make for yourself a carved image - any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; Exodus 20:2-4 (NKJV)

I don't know about you, but when I think of God, I think of the One who created the heavens and the stars; the earth, and the oceans, the animals and of course us humans.  When you look up the word, "god" in the dictionary, the definitions range.   Definitions such as:

1.    Supernatural Being
2.    Figure or image
3.    Something that dominates
4.    Somebody admired

I can see where each of these definitions can describe the One and True God Yahweh (YHWH).  But I can also see how they can describe "false gods" as well.  For example, some have taken sporting activities and allowed these activities to dominate their life, as they fix their eyes and attention upon them; placing a great amount of resources effort and time into them.  Professional athletes are no longer ordinary humans who happen to compete or play sports, but they have been promoted and marketed to be veritable "gods" among mere mortals - No longer admired, but worshiped.

It isn't just the sports or the athletes playing them either - possessions, careers, money, and a host of other objects and/or people can fill the role of "god" to some.  There are those who worship animals and reptiles literally, or figuratively as their "god."  There are those who worship various statues, religious items or figurines representing their "god."  Some would agree these items aren't actually "god" but they are still made in the image of their "god" and therefore they are sacred and should be worshipped. We see this being spoken of in the Book of Romans.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man - and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Romans 1:22-23 (NKJV)

But we are plainly told not to do this in our Bible - God's written Word.  The Book of Exodus records Gods command on this.

for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God Exodus 34:14 (NKJV)

The point is, we can make anything our "god."   All it takes is our placing a greater amount of our time, talent, energy, or resources into something more than we do with the Lord, and it can become our "god."  It's when something has a greater value to us than God, such as pleasure, or a creation - either living or inanimate.

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV)

You see, God wants to have a relationship with us - He wants to know us (Matt. 7:21).  We might find ourselves much like the Israelites as recorded in Judges 10:13-16 - crying out because we are forming, serving and worshiping false "gods."  But if we know God, and are willing to humble ourselves, to pray and seek His face - turn from our wicked ways of living and from the worshiping these false "gods," then He will be faithful to hear us and heal us.

if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you today.  Ask God if there is anything in your life needing to be laid down.  Is there anything taking the place of God in your life.  If there is, lay it down at His feet and turn from it.  Place your effort into kingdom things, and keep your eyes upon Him.

If you find yourself lacking peace and you want to know God in an intimate way - cry out to Him right now.  Join me in this prayer to Him.   Lord, I am sorry for putting other things ahead of You.  I am sorry for worshiping created items instead of the one who creates.  Forgive me, and cleanse me today.  Fill me afresh with Your Spirit and empower me to walk with You.  Father, I repent and turn from these things and choose to follow You.  Help me to keep my eyes upon You and guide my paths. In Jesus precious name, amen&

Hey if you just prayed this prayer, then God bless you!  What a beautiful day God has made - let's rejoice and be glad in it...

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from God's Word according to the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to Gods nature and promises to us?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to humble yourself and to repent (turn from) anything possibly distracting you in your walk with God?

APPLICATION: Stay focused on your walk with the Lord.  Make time each day to spend with Him in reading, studying, and praying.  Let Him guide you in all understanding, and never put more time, energy, or resources into something more than your walk with God.

Father, Thank You for all provision.  Thank You for my health, and the freedom to choose my path in life.  Thank You for the wisdom and guidance You have given me.  Help me to identify those things within my life which have far too great of importance, and which are not in Your will. In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
