What Would Be Left?

What Would Be Left?

See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens." The words once more indicate the removing of what can be shaken - that is, created things - so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Hebrews 12:25-27 (NKJV)

It is amazing how fast things can change at the blink of an eye.  Calamity can strike at any point albeit an accident, sickness or even a natural disaster, such as an earthquake.  There are few things more unsettling than the earth shaking violently below our feet.  There is no place to hide, or to run to get away from this great power.  I believe it is simply reality entering into our mind - those things, which we had thought to be solid and sure, are anything but.

As I was reading the verses above in Hebrews, I couldn't help but think of the recent surge in large earthquakes.  They seem to be all too frequent in the last few years, and in diverse places, with hundreds of thousands dying in one recent quake in Haiti.  Jesus told us these things would be happening prior to His return.

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Matthew 24:7-8 (NKJV)

Yes, there have been earthquakes happening throughout time, but not to the degree we have seen.  Back in 1976, a geological survey team, finding a shift in the tectonic plates, made this discovery.  This shifting was causing more frequent earthquakes, and at a greater intensity than at any other time in recorded history.

Looking further into this verse in Matthew we see the accompanying of pestilences, which is referring to an "epidemic of disease."  I believe the Aids outbreak and its rapid spreading is fulfilling this portion of the prophecy as approximately 39.5 million people are living with HIV/AIDS.

Famine is a major source for death, and it is estimated 1.02 billion people across the world are hungry.  Every day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes - one child every five seconds.

Q:    What does all this mean to us as Christians?

A:    It means Jesus is coming back at any moment, and we'd better be prepared and be about our Fathers business.

I think it is very unfortunate our environmental upbringing has planted a false indicator of success within the confines of our mind.  Right out of the gate, success can be programmed and mapped out for our children - including the obtaining and acquisition of various items needed to fulfill our obsession for pleasure and fun.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not opposed to education, planning, having fun, or owning things.  But when our objective for living is based solely upon owning and using stuff, we are headed for a shake up.  We need to be looking for Christs return and living for eternal things.  Jesus told us this as well.

Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him. John 6:27 (NKJV)

Some will inevitably fear what they feel to be tough persecution and judgment from others because of their Christian walk.  They may even find some people choose not to hang out with them, or perhaps receive mocking or ridicule from them.  But this is nothing compared to the persecution and judgment awaiting those who say "No" to God's offer of grace, and forgiveness, and who will deny Jesus as Lord and Savior.

This is exactly what Hebrews 12:25-27 is talking about.  God is going to shake loose everything temporal.  He is going to separate the chaff (lost) from the wheat (Saved).  Only those things, which are eternal, will remain.  I believe we are actually seeing the beginning of such separation in our world today.  Many people are having those temporal things shaken away - exposing what is left.  I believe God is giving us a final wake-up call before Jesus returns.  For those who don't know Him, they are being drawn to Him.  For those who do know Him, they too are being drawn to Him as their faith is being strengthened, and their focus is being sharpened.

Hey Christian, let me ask you something.  If God were to shake loose everything in your life today - those temporal things, such as the cars, houses, awards, and jobs, what would be left?  Would there still be a witness of love for Christ?  Would there still be a love to minister to someone in need - to share the gospel message with the lost?  Would their be a list of people who have been exposed to Christ through your actions?

Let's live as if we believe Jesus is coming back tomorrow.  Let's live in a way that glorifies God, and be builders of eternal things.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the Scriptures with regard to Jesus return and the way we should be living?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you seeking to glorify God in all you do?  Are you sharing the Gospel message with those who are lost?

APPLICATION: Make it a point to start your day in prayer.  Ask God to guide you and lead you in all understanding.  Ask Him to fill you with His Spirit.  Ask Him to give you opportunities to be used in Kingdom work.

Father, Thank You for Your patience and longsuffering with me.  Thank You for being faithful during the times I have been faithless.  Fill me with Your Spirit today and empower me to do those things You will lead me to do.  Use me in Kingdom work today.  In Jesus precious name, amen&

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
