Do You Know Who You Are - Part I

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

Have you ever pondered the question, "Who am I?"  It is one that will conjure up a variety of thoughts and ideas based on the vastly different personal views that each one of us holds.

Our view of who we are can be based on many things such as what we do as a profession, where we live, and even by what we may possess.  For instance, one can determine that they are a "Fireman" based on the fact that they work for the fire department.  One can determine that they are a "Californian" based on the fact that they live in sunny southern California.  And one can determine that they are a "Successful business person" based on the fact that they have experienced moderate success while doing business.

Q:    Even though we may be anyone of these things, does it really answer the question accurately as to who we are?

If you are a Christian believer, then I would answer "No."  You see, the Bible clearly states we have been given a "New Identity" once we have been saved - one that is found in Christ Jesus.  We are told in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that if anyone is in Christ, he is a "New Creation," and those old things have passed away and all things have become new.  Okay, so we know that we can now say, "I am a new creation in Christ Jesus" to answer that question, but that is not all, because we have been given so much more as well.  I want to share 25-things that we can now include the next time we answer this question.

1.    I am now born again. (1Pet. 1:23)
2.    I am now God's child. (Jn. 1:12)
3.    I am now a citizen of heaven. (Phil. 3:20)
4.    I am now born of God and the evil one cannot touch me. (1 Jn. 5:18)
5.    I am now a personal witness of Jesus Christ. (Acts 1:8)
6.    I am now God's coworker. (2 Corinthians 6:1)
7.    I am now a minister of reconciliation. (2 Corinthians 5:17-20)
8.    I am now God's workmanship. (Ephesians 2:10)
9.    I am now a member of God's household. (Ephesians 2:19)
10.    I am now a holy temple (Ephesians 2:21; 1 Corinthians 6:19)
11.    I am now in Christ Jesus. (Eph. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:30)
12.    I am now forgiven by God. (Eph. 1:8; Col. 1:14)
13.    I am now a saint. (Eph 1:18)
14.    I am now salt and light of the earth. (Mt. 5:13-14)
15.    I am a now a dwelling for the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 2:22)
16.    I am now empowered by God. (Eph. 6:10)
17.    I am now dead to sin. (Rom. 1:12)
18.    I am now Jesus' disciple. (Jn. 13:15)
19.    I am now blameless before God. (1Cor. 1:8)
20.    I am now set free from the law of sin and death. (Rom. 8:2; Jn. 8:32)
21.    I am now more than a conqueror. (Rom. 8:37)
22.    I am now the Righteousness of God. (2Cor. 5:21)
23.    I am now protected by God. (John 10:28)
24.    I am now victorious through Christ. (1Cor. 15:57)
25.    I am now qualified to share in His inheritance. (Col. 1:12)

Knowing these truths, or even remembering them on a regular basis is essential for us to be successful in our walk as Christian men and women.  If the enemy can get us to doubt these promises from God, then we will live according to what we believe - even if that belief is based on one of Satan's lies.

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to print out these 25-truths of who you are now that you are in Christ Jesus, or even to pass this list on to other Christian brothers and sisters as well.  We have been instructed to read our Bibles so that we may know these things and to share them, because they build us up.

"So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:32 (NKJV)

In part II of this devotional we will continue to look at this principle and we will also look at the inevitable question that follows, which is, "Do you know where you are going."

STUDY QUESTION: What can you learn about your identity according to the Scriptures contained within this devotional?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you found the enemy tempting you to base your identity on anything other than Christ?

APPLICATION: Continue to read the scriptures associated with the "I am" statements above.  It is this truth that will shape your thoughts, and eventually your actions.

Father, Thank You for Your promises and Your Word that identifies the truths associated with who I am since I have placed my faith in Your Son as my personal Lord and Savior.  Thank You for the inheritance and blessings that I have been given as a result.  Help me to remember these facts and to use them to fight the lies of the enemy.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
