Sin - Food Poisoning To Our Spirit

As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly. Proverbs 26:11 (NKJV)

Ever go out for a meal at a particular place that you like and get something that sounded good only to get sick after eating it?  Most people believe they've come down with the flu when this happens, but chances are good it was a case of food poisoning.  It's a bummer really because I tend to not eat that type of food again for a long time because of the memory of being sick.

There are fewer things in life worse than getting food poisoning. Your body is fighting really hard to heal itself, and as a result it is attempting to get rid of the poison that has found its way inside of you.  I think the worse part of getting sick is the vomiting.  It is the part that most of us dread and even mentioning it here is probably conjuring up some bad memories with some who are reading this.  Stay with me here because I believe this analogy will help us overcome some ongoing sinful habits.

For me the part I hate the most is just before I get sick - the pre-puking stage.  It's that point where I am holding off the inevitable and I know that I am going to lose the battle and eventually empty my stomach contents.  And sure enough, I finally can't stand it any more and in a series of violent heaves, it is finished.  Whatever was bad in my body has been removed and I feel better immediately.  I've talked to many people and almost all can relate and follow the same pattern.

It is the same way with "Sin" in our "Spiritual body." I think sin is just like a rotten piece of meat, and it affects our spiritual body much in the same way the bad meat would affect our "Physical body."  Some sins are not intentional and once we are aware of them there isn't much of a fight to get rid of them.  There are other sins in our life that are like that favorite food item that isn't so good for us in the first place, and instead of dealing with them, we tend to live with what some call "A bad habit."  But it is much more than that - it is just as dangerous as any poison is to our flesh.

Q:    Why do we fight the process of vomiting if we know we have something poisonous in us?  Why don't we just go and help the process along and get it over with?

A:    Let me give you a couple reasons that I think are possible.  One reason is we think we can handle whatever we have partaken.  And the second reason is that we don't want to face the painful and sometimes messy process of getting it out.

It's the same way in our Christian walk with sin; we think we can continue to sin and make it through without getting the sin out of our life.  Or, much like when we get physically sick, we don't want to face the process of getting it out.  But this is no way to live a healthy Christian Life.  The reality is, the more time we spend in God's Word, the more the sin becomes like poison to our body.  Even though our old fleshy nature is still in tack, it should not be in charge.  Eventually our new Christ-like nature will want to puke it out as well.  There are a few questions to consider though.

Q:    How long will we allow it to hang out once we know it needs to go?
Q:    Will we try to live with it like a rotten piece of meet?
Q:    Are we too embarrassed to just deal with it because it might seem a bit too messy?  Or worse yet,
Q:    Do we want to hide it so no one knows that we're dealing with something that is making us spiritually sick?

He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy. Proverbs 28:13 (NKJV)

Hey Christian, if you have some reoccurring sin that is plaguing your Spiritual walk as a Christian, then I want to encourage you today to stop partaking of it because it is "Poisonous meat" to your Spirit.   Go ahead and take a sick-day and spend some time alone with the Lord.  Find a place that is quiet; take your Bible and go and read a little, and then pray to God.  Ask Him about what is poisoning your Spirit - He will give you the answer and the remedy.  It will be the best time you will ever experience for healing.

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Matthew 7:11 (NKJV)

We serve a mighty God - One who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the Scriptures contained within this devotional about our sin, and God's willingness to forgive us, and help us?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you dealing with something that is poisoning your Spirit?

APPLICATION: Take some time and meet with the Lord - let Him heal you today.  Trust me, once it's out, you'll feel great!

Father, Thank You for healing me of the many things that were poisoning me.  Help me today to see other areas that are affecting my Christian walk, and the ability of the Holy Spirit to do what He is capable of through my life.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
