Money-Part IV
Exposing Satan's Lies With God's Truth

Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? "Therefore do not worry, saying, "What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:30-34 (NKJV)

We are looking at a devotional series on "Money," and 10-worldly views of what it will bring us if we have enough of it.  These worldly views are lies from Satan that tempt and lure us to become distracted from seeing the truth of God's Word.  In Part III we exposed Satan's lie that money would somehow make us "Successful" and "Bring us happiness."

Let's take a look at our next two "Lies" from the enemy in the "Worldly views" of having riches.

  • Money gives you options.

This "Worldly view" is one that most people would initially find to be easy to understand and even agree with as it would imply, "Hey if I had more money, then I would have options in which I then could choose."  Again, a subtle lie from the enemy that has further reaching implications.  Our "Options" do not originate from money - they come from God.

God wants us to be fully dependent on Him, and not on our bank account.  If we have ample money and we feel that we are somehow more independent as a result, then we are openly acknowledging that we are not fully dependent on God.  A proper perspective would be that no matter what amount of money a person may have, they are still fully dependent on God and they will never feel adequate in this resource in and of itself.

We have a vast resource in our Lord, and it is in Him that we have every "Good" option that is needed, as He is able to do much more than we could ever imagine by the power of the Holy Spirit that indwells in every Christian.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

There is a saying that says, "Where God guides - God provides."  I believe this to be absolute truth.  Jeremiah tells us that God has a specific plan for our life, plans for a future and a hope (Jer. 29:11), and if God has a plan for each of His children, then He will provide everything we need (cf. 2Tim. 3:16-17).  Simply put, God gives us every good and needed "Option" for that specific plan for us.

Let's take a look at our next "Lie" from the enemy or "Worldly view" of having riches.

  • Money brings freedom.

There is nothing quite like "Freedom."  Millions of men have died fighting for it.  The thought of money being able to buy it rings hollow to me.  I'm not even sure I can follow this one for sure, but if it is implying that by our having money we can be free to travel, or move about, or to have freedom to make choices.  I don't see that as being an absolute truth.  Again, money is a "Tool" that can be used for many things to appropriate a desired outcome, but it is never the "One" that brings that outcome.

If I were to look at this in all truth, it is actually the "Desire" within the heart of man that brings about "Enslavement."  It is ironic that we are always looking for an antidote to our poor choices rather than a proper way of preventing the "Bite" of the sinful choice.  We desire various things and we are willing to "Enslave" ourselves for long periods of time under the contracts and payments to obtain those things.

We need to take a look at Matthew chapter 6 because it is there that Jesus gave us a promise to take care of our needs - all of them.
But we were given responsibility as well when we were told, "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then these things will be "Added" unto you."(Matt. 6:33)

Hey Christian, we have been given all the freedom we need to make the proper choices, and we have been given full assurance in God's provision for our life.  I'll finish this with what Jesus told us about true freedom as recorded in the Book of John.

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION:  What can we learn from the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to obtaining options and freedom in our life?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you looking to God to give you the options that are best for you?  Are you seeking God's Word for His truth to obtain true freedom?

APPLICATION: We need to continue to read our Bibles daily.   It is only through our reading of the Word that we will be able to see the Lord's will, and understand all that we need to know.

Father, Thank You for opening up the door for every option that I need in my life.  Thank You for giving me freedom from sin, and the bondage that I was enslaved in because of it.  Help me to remember these and the other freedoms that you have given me in each situationthe freedom to choose.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
