Going Through The Motions

Going Through The Motions
What if We Really Gave Everything?

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you foreverthe Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 16:16-17,26 (NKJV)

I don't know if I've ever mentioned it in any of my writings, but I love music - fact of the matter is that I always have.  We were raised with music in our home and I have always filled my life with it.  Music is a funny thing as it can invoke passion, motivation, and thought.  That can be both good and bad as it depends on what you are listening to.  Like that old saying goes, "We are what we eat."

Another thing about my love for music is the lyrics.  Some would say that music is all about the drumbeat, or guitar rift that draws them to certain songs, or perhaps its the voice - for me it is all of that and more; it is the lyrics as much as anything.  Such is the case for a song that inspires me by an artist named, Matthew West.  The song is titled, "The Motions," and he makes a statement and proposes a question that I find challenging me in my walk as a Christian.  It goes like this:

I don't wanna go through the motions
I don't wanna go one more day
Without Your all consuming passion inside of me
I don't wanna spend my whole life asking
What if I had given everything?
Instead of going through the motions

Can you relate to this?  Have you found yourself going through the motions?  I know that I have and I have found it to be a dry desolate place that can be filled with fatigue, striving, disappointment and non-fulfillment.

Q:    What causes this to happen in our lives?

A:    It happens when we choose to do things our own way rather than being Holy Spirit led and do them God's way.

Simply put, when we choose to live our life seeking to follow our own wants and desires - however noble they may be - we are not seeking to allow God to direct our path.  We are not being used to the capacity of what He has given us.  I find it interesting how God let's us freely choose, even after we have made Him the Lord of our life, and have chosen to "Follow Him."

Q:    How can we follow The Holy Spirit's leading if we are too busy walking in a different direction that we have chosen, or worse yet, have allowed someone else to choose for us?
Another side affect of doing things in our "Own way" is that we can either loose our passion for what we do as we burn out, or we can become obsessed with reaching goals that we think will bring us fulfillment and satisfaction.  Either way these are damaging to us and others, and they inhibit the joy and fulfillment that God intends on us having 24-hours a day.  As Christians we have been given the Holy Spirit to live within our bodies, and we should have the "Fruit" of Him living in us manifesting in our lives.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)

Another attribute of letting the Holly Spirit lead us is that we are in the "Will of God."  This means that we will be equipped to do everything He has asks us to do, and it will be with mighty power and with a great passion.

Satan and his emissaries don't want us listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit - they want us fixing our eyes on this world and the things that this world has to offer.  They want us fixing our eyes on earthly treasures and pleasures.  They want us fixing our eyes on building earthly kingdoms.  The sad part of it is that Satan will entice each of us to follow these fleshly instincts with the allure of satisfaction, and then he will mock us when we find emptiness.  And sadly, much time has been wasted by then and many people have been hurt.

I don't want to get to the end of this life on earth and be face-to-face with God and be asking myself, "What if I had given everything, instead of going through the motions?"

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you today to stop and make a decision right now.  Make a choice today to pray to God and ask for His leading in your life for every decision that you are facing.  Slow down when making those decisions allowing for the Holy Spirit to direct you in peace. I'm not saying your not giving it everything - just wanting to make sure that it is God doing it in you, and through you, and not just of yourself.

Let's get that "Passion" for living unto the Lord into our lives daily!  It is exciting to know that God is living in me, and that He wants to talk with me, and show me all sorts of cool things to help others and myself. I don't want to go through the motions today - I want to give everything I have to serving our Lord - to  be used in a mighty way...How about you?

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn about the Holy Spirit and what we receive from Him from the Scriptures contained within this devotional?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you daily?

APPLICATION: Let's walk passionately for the Lord and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, prompt us, empower us, and direct us in everything we do.

Father, I want to Thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit to help me in my walk.  I am sorry for the many times where I have taken the lead and said and done things that were not only wrong but damaging.  Help me to continue to walk with passion, but also in a way that builds up the body of believers. In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
