Are You Ready-Part II
Those without "Oil" are those who said, "No"

"Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. Matthew 25:1-4 (NKJV)

We are looking at a series titled, "Are you ready."  In this series we are looking into the Book of Matthew to see a series of parables given by Jesus that illustrate what will take place at His 2nd coming - how there will be those who will be found "Not Ready."

In Part I of this series we looked at some of the signs that would be preceding Jesus' return.  We then looked at the first parable of, "A thief in the night," which spoke of the suddenness of Christ's return and the unpreparedness of those who were unsaved and unprepared for His return.  These people cared more for the things of this world then they did of getting right with God.  Much like a child whose parents were away - they played - only to be caught off-guard by the Lord's return.

The second example given to us speaks of the same thing, but this time Jesus uses a different parable of "10-Virgins."  He says,  "The kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps." (Mt. 25:1-4)

The word, "Oil" used here in this parable is a word that is synonymous anointing.  We have two types of anointing referenced in the Bible; that of oil, and that of the Holy Spirit.  The two are so closely integrally related, that Bible translators sometimes use oil and anoint interchangeably as synonymous verbs (e.g, Isa. 21:5).

So for this parable, the oil in the lamps (torches) represents the presence of the Holy Spirit.  It is from this oil, or Holy Spirit, that true light comes from.  We should point out that the 10-virgins all looked the same on the outside - they all were dressed for the wedding with the proper outer garments in place - they all appeared ready for the wedding feast (Eternity).

It is the same way with some people who profess to be "Christian," and yet they don't have a saving relationship with Christ - He is not their God, and they have not accepted Him as such. We see this again in many man made religions that focus more upon their external efforts or "Works" to earn salvation rather than God's "Grace" (Unmerited favor) alone.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)

It is great to have an outward manifestation (Works) of your belief in God - but this outward showing is "False," "Dead" and "Worthless" if it is not fueled by the "True" regeneration that comes from by the saving "Grace" of God in the way of the Holy Spirit.

True "Works" (Fruit) come as a result of the saving relationship with Jesus Christ.  He personally told us that we need to "Abide" in Him, and that He would then abide in us - that we could do "Nothing" without Him (John 15:4-5).

We are blessed and comforted when we know that there is oil in our lamp.  And it is equally blessing to see the fruit (Works) of God's empowerment within our life as a result.

If by chance you are reading this and have never been offered a chance to know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, then I want to include that chance today. I would caution you to be careful of Satan's plan to try to stop you in anyway he can with his lies - don't believe him.

Perhaps you have made a profession faith earlier in your life, but have since gone back to the things or "Ways" of this world - you've lost that first "Love" that you had when you first accepted Jesus.  If that is you, then I would like to give you an opportunity to re-dedicate your life today.

It could also be that you have a great relationship with Jesus but you know of someone who needs His love in their life - if that is you, then I want to encourage you to share this devotional with them today.  Again, I know the enemy will give you a number of reasons why you shouldn't, but I would give you one in response - true fruit of our relationship with God manifested in our love for others.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 25:1-4, what does Jesus say about the five virgins who possessed no "Oil?"

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there "Oil" in your lamp?

APPLICATION: If you have a relationship with Jesus, then continue to abide in Him and share the saving Gospel message.

Prayer of Salvation: Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that I am a sinner, and I'm sorry for my sin.  Forgive me Lord.  I turn from it now.  I believe that Jesus died on the cross, shedding His blood as full payment for my sins - past present and future - and by rising from the dead He demonstrated that He is God.

As best as I know how, I am believing in Him, putting all my trust in Jesus Christ as my personal Savior as my "ONLY" hope for salvation and eternal life.

Jesus, I ask you to come into my heart and my life right now.   Wash me - cleanse me and make me whole. Write my name in your Book of Life.  Come Be my Lord, my Savior, and my friend.  Empower me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit and make me new.  Help me as I choose to follow you all the days of my life.  I ask that You will give me increasing faith and wisdom and joy as I study and believe Your Word.  In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

If you have just prayed this prayer; congratulations!  You are now "Born Again," and "Saved."  Share this with someone who knows The Lord, and share it with us here at My Daily Dose - we would love to hear what God is doing.

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
