I Want To Know What Love Is

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.  1John 4:7-8, 16 (NKJV)

"I want to know what love is."  Such were the lyrics of a #1 song back in 1985 by a group known as "Foreigner." The lead singer of the band was a man by the name of "Lou Gramm."  As is the case with many hard rock bands, alcohol and drugs had been a tool of temptation and were being used regularly by the members of the band.

Worldly success was taking its toll on the band even as they were on their way to selling over 50-million albums.  This fast-track lifestyle offered them whatever their flesh desired as long as they would continue to worship it.  And that's exactly what Satan has planned for every one of us if we seek to worship the things of this world.  It's what he tempted Jesus with literally, as recorded in the Book of Matthew.

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." Matthew 4:8 (NKJV)

One night after playing Madison Gardens, lead singer Lou Gramm faced the fact that his life was spinning out of control.   The lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock and roll had now controlled him and secured a stronghold over him - he was tired of this lifestyle and he needed help, and he needed it fast.

The next morning he checked into a rehabilitation center where he was able to get that help to detoxify.  But along with the detoxification process that was provided, a Pastor sat and shared the saving message of Jesus Christ with Lou.  And there within the walls of that center, Lou Gramm became a born again Christian - God had detoxified Lou not only from drugs, but from his confessed sin as well.

Lou left the center a new man, and he returned to the band.  He didn't initially tell them, but as they started their next tour, the time had come to stand fast for what he knew to be right.  Once aboard the tour bus, the line of cocaine and a stash of marijuana came out, and it was here that Lou let his band mates know that this was no longer his life as he said, "I'm not going to do that anymore."  Stunned his friends looked at him and asked him this question, "What in the world is wrong with you?"

It wasn't that there was anything wrong with Lou, in fact, for the first time in his life, things were right - Lou Gramm had found Jesus and in doing so, had found purpose for his life.  He had been singing their #1 song, "I want to know what love is," and he had now found out the answer - it was the love of his Lord and Savior forgiving him.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1Corinthians 1:18 (NKJV)

Lou Gramm eventually left the band Foreigner, and started his new group called, The Lou Gramm band, which has released a new Christian Rock CD in 2009.  Lou will always be a foreigner at heart - but not the rock and roll type of foreigner - a Christian foreigner here on earth whose home is in Heaven.

Hey Christian, God has a plan for your life (See Jer. 29:11).  You don't have to be a rock star to be used; you just have to be willing to be used.  And we need to be willing to lay down anything in our life that has control over us.  It could be alcohol, sex and drugs, just as it was in Lou's life, or it could be gossip, slander, or un-forgiveness just as easily.  It doesn't really matter what it is - what matters is whether we are willing to lay it down at God's feet today, and repent of it.  We just need to be willing, and then ask God to help us.  May we be as truthful and willing as King David when he said, "Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; Try my mind and my heart" (Ps. 26:2).

When we partake in the carnality of what the world seems to offer we need to know that we are walking a path that has been carefully groomed by Satan and his emissaries, and it is one that leads to death.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Romans 8:6 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you right now to talk to God and to ask Him to reveal anything that needs to be laid down today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1John 4:7-8, 16, what is "Love?"

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is God's Love abiding in you?  Are you loving others in the way that God loves them?

APPLICATION: Don't stop up the flow of God's love in your life.  Let Him love others through you despite how they receive it or return the love.

Father, Thank You for Your tremendous love in my life.  Thank You for abiding in me and allowing me to love others in a way that only You can do.  Fill me up today and show me whom You would have me share with.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
