Love Ya Dad!

Love Ya Dad!

"If you love Me, keep My commandments." John 14:15 (NKJV)

I can attest from personal experience, that there is a great feeling when a father receives a card, or note from their children expressing their love for him.  Just a simple, "Love ya Dad!" conveys a feeling of admiration respect and joy mixed together and it warms the heart.

I have to believe that God - our Heavenly Father - feels the same way when we tell Him that we love Him too.

Both of my daughters tell me that they love me each and every time I talk with them on the phone.  It can be at the end of a lengthy conversation that we are having, or at the end of a short conversation such as, "Hi dad is mom there?" - It doesn't matter; they always end the conversation with "Love ya dad."

One thing I have noticed over the last 20-years or so with my girls is that even though the words, "Love ya dad" are the same, the way they say it, and the tone of their voice may change from time to time - not to the point that they are saying this hypocritically - just that during our conversation we may have had different points of view or varying opinions on something, or it could have been one of accountability, or perhaps praise.  Still each time it ends with a sincere, "I love ya dad."

But despite the subtle changes in the way they tell me I always know that the girls really do love.   I know this because of the actions that will always accompany their words - they have always shown respect for my decisions as their father, and have obeyed me with respect to what I may have asked of them.

This is exactly what Jesus instructed all of us to do as well when He said, "If you love Me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15).  This is the fruit of our true love for God - to show respect for Him by obeying His commandments and His Word.  And when we love God it is played out in our life, as we love others.  Loving God and loving people are linked together - they cannot be separated.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 1John 5:2 (NKJV)

I believe my kid's love for me grew because they spent a great deal of time and interaction with me.  They felt the love and affection that I showered upon them; they saw the provision that was made available to them, and they learned to seek and trust me as I guided them continuously on a safe path.  And because of this love our relationship continues to grow.

It is the same way with our heavenly Father - as we continue to spend time with Him, and acknowledge all of His provisions, His guidance, and His goodness; we can't help but have a love deep within our heart for Him.  And it is this love for God that ultimately causes us to turn from those sinful and selfish things that we might be tempted to do in our flesh and instead go in a completely different direction.

...the goodness of God leads you to repentance? Romans 2:4 (NKJV)

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you today to spend some time with your Heavenly Father.  Reflect on all the provisions He has blessed you with.  Think upon the gift of eternal life that He has promised to you.  Look at the Guidance that He has provided to you contained within His Word.  Take some time to talk to Him and to let Him hear these three words from you voice, "Love Ya Dad!"

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regards to loving God?

APPLICATION: Obey His commandments, and love others.

Father, Thank You for all that You have done for me.  Thank You for all provision and blessing that You have poured out on my life, and the lives of my family.  I just wanted to take a moment to say, "Love Ya Dad!"  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
