Have Regard For Good Things In The Sight Of All Men
25-Ways to Honor God-Number 22

And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. Proverbs 3:4 (NKJV)

We are looking at a series of devotionals which are revealing 25-ways to bring glory and honor to God - these are actually duties or responsibilities for every Christian. We find these 25-ways in Romans 12:9-21.

Today we will be looking at the 2nd of our "Duties to Our Personal Enemies" as Christian men and women. These are our duties to those who we identify as people who are coming against us and persecuting us. And that 2nd duty is also our 22nd way in our series of 25-ways to honor God.

22.    "Have regard for good things in the sight of all men." (Rom 12:17)

This means that we are to have a regard for what is right, or "Always respect what is right."  The word, "Right" refers to those things that are "fundamentally right," "good," and "honest."

This includes "Respecting" what is right in the sight of our enemies as well.  Having such respect for others helps us to respond in the proper way rather than resolving to act in the way we are being treated during our times of persecution and affliction.

We are told that the "Fear" or "Respect" of the Lord is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death (Proverbs 14:27), and this is very fitting when dealing with our enemies in a way that honors God.  If we have this fear--this "Respect" or "Reverence" for God, and His Word it will help us to be self-disciplined.  We will be able to stand when we are tempted by the enemy to do wrong instead of what is right. (Proverbs 9:10; 14:27 2Chron 19:7, 9)

I like the way English Philosopher, Francis Bacon said it; he said,

"A man who studies revenge keeps his own wounds green.  Men must not turn into bees and kill themselves in stinging others."

Hey, let's face it, if we really want to get even, love the person by forgiving and forgetting their offense against you.  When we keep our eyes on the goal of honoring God, we will always understand what is at stake during these times of confrontation and testing.  Other people are always watching, so it is especially important to conduct ourselves in a way, so that everyone who witnesses our actions can conclude that we are honorable.  So it is very important to do things proper and Christ-like.

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you today to think about how you will handle the next time you face an attack against you.  If we do this we will not be caught off-guard.  Remember, it is great that we read and study God's Word each day, but it is even better when we live it.  English Evangelist John Wesley said right when he penned this quote,

"Beware you be not swallowed up in books!  And ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge."

Let's give our enemies an ounce or two of God's love the next time we are attacked and see what God does with it - I think we will all be amazed.  Besides, that's exactly what Jesus told us to do so we know that we will be blessed by Him for our obedience one day soon.

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, Matthew 5:44 (NKJV)

One more thing that we should always remember when we find it hard to love our enemies, and that is that we were once enemies of God as well (Col. 1:19-21).  And yet, while we were yet sinners, God showed His great love for us allowing Jesus to die in our place (Rom 5:8).

Hey Christian, God isn't asking us to physically die for our enemies - just to die to our selfish need to hate and be vindictive.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn about how we are to act towards our enemies by the scriptures contained within this devotional?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you prepared to respond in a loving way the next time you find yourself being attacked or persecuted by your enemy?

APPLICATION: Seek God's wisdom, discernment, agape love, and strength when you face persecution.

Father, Thank You for Your grace, mercy, love and forgiveness of me even though I was once your enemy.  Help me to remember this the next time I face attacks or persecution from my enemies.  Help me to have the strength, and love needed to respond in the proper way.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
