Cling To What Is Good!
25-Ways to Honor God-Number 3

The desire of the righteous is only good, Proverbs 11:23 (NKJV)

We are looking at a series of devotionals which are revealing 25-ways to bring glory and honor to God - these are actually duties or responsibilities for every Christian believer. We find these 25-ways in Romans 12:9-21.  Today we will be looking at the third duty of our "Personal duties" as Christian men and women. And that third duty is to:

3.    Cling to what is good. (Rom 12:9c)

This word, "Cling" used in this text is from the Greek word, "kollao kol-lah-o", and is from the root word, "kolla," which means, "to glue," "to join," and "to cleave." And it can be used of any bond such as, physical, mental, or spiritual.   This is the same word we are given when God gave the command for a man to leave his mother and father, and to "Cleave" to his wife.

This type of clinging is the strongest type of clinging that is possible.  Think about a piece of Plywood and how the many layers are glued together.  If you were to try and separate the two pieces, you would end up causing extensive damage to both of them - It would not be possible to safely separate either piece.

And so it is with us as Christians; we are given the command to "Cling" to what is good - to be joined or glued to those "Good" things that God has called us to.  If we try to separate ourselves from the "Good," then we too, will be damaged significantly.

We see this in every Christian who once sought after a relationship with God, and then turned and went back to their old ways, and habits.  We are warned not to do this, and we are given a very graphic analogy in Proverbs of what we are likened to if we choose to do this - we are fools.

As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly. Proverbs 26:11 (NKJV)

Okay, so we can clearly see that we are to stick to what is good - but what exactly is good?

The word, "Good," that is given here is from the Greek word, "agathos, ag-ath-os" This word refers to those things that are valuable or virtuous, honest or worthy.

God's Word tells us that we are to think on these things.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. Philippians 4:8 (NKJV)

We are told to think on these things because we will usually eventually act upon those things that we are thinking about, if we think on them long enough.   That's why Paul told us to not be conformed to this world - but instead, we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.  As we read the Word of God, we can know with absolute certainty the "Good" and perfect will of God - and then cling to that.

Hey Christian, let's start to test those things that we are thinking about.  Let's decide if it is "Good."  Let's decide if it is noble, right, excellent, or praiseworthy.  We need to use the wisdom and discernment that God gives us to carefully evaluate every thought that goes through the filter known as our mind.  After all, our mind should never be a garbage disposal.  

Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (NKJV)

Let's hold fast to what we know to be right - what we know to be good.  Let's not be that person who turns back to our old ways.  

STUDY QUESTION: What can we know for certainty by looking at the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to our thinking and actions?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you really thinking about those things that come into your mind, and then lining them up to God's Word?

APPLICATION: Start today - take it one thought at a time, and see if what you are thinking upon is good.  If not, get rid of it, and replace it with something good.  Now do those things.

Father, Thank You for giving me a mind that can separate the good from the bad.  Help me to see clearly what is good, and then give me the ability to cling to those things.  And please give me the strength to get rid of anything that is evil in my life.  In Jesus precious name, amen...
