25-Ways to Honor
The foundation for honoring God

By humility and the fear of the LORD  Are riches and honor and life. Proverbs 22:4 (NKJV)

We have been told in Proverbs 22:4 that by our humility and fear (respect) of the Lord, we will be blessed with riches, honor, and life.  So our part is humility and fear. In addition to this, we are to respect God, and His Word.  Our reward is abundant to say the least.  In a world that looks to the stock market for indicators of hope, we can know with total certainty that we "Will" be blessed.

So with the promises of God as called out in this proverb, I want to begin to apply this humility and fear with our next set of Devotionals so we can all experience the rich blessing that God is going to bestow upon our life.

Okay, I am excited about this series of devotionals titled, "25-ways to honor God."  In this series we will look at 25-duties we are exhorted to perform as Christian men and women.  As we perform these duties, we can know within our minds and hearts that we are bringing honor and glory to God and His name, because we are being imitators of God, and we are reflecting a Christ-like nature.

These 25-Duties are broken down into 4-distinct areas, and they are found in Romans 12:9-21.  They are as follows:

1.    The first 3 are our personal "Duties" (Vs. 9)
2.    The next 10 are our "Duties" to other believers (Vs. 10-13)
3.    The next 7 are our "Duties" to every person (Vs. 15-16)
4.    The last 5 are our "Duties" to our personal enemies (Vs. 17-21)

I want to encourage you as we go through these 25-ways; to let them resonate within the chambers of our mind - meditate upon them.  This is exactly what the Psalmist is talking about in Psalm 119.

Make me understand the way of Your precepts; So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works. Psalms 119:27 (NJKV)

Knowing what God has done, as well as what He is doing for us, should prompt a desire within our heart to seek Him and to know His Word - to want to understand it and to apply it to our lives.  It is only when we take the time to study and rightly divide God's Word that we can know that His hand will be able to transform us just as the potter transforms the clay.

But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand. Isaiah 64:8 (NKJV)

As you begin to think about how you may be doing in these 25-duties, there will be times when you find that you are not doing so well - that's okay, but just be honest before God.  He already knows, and will help you in these areas.  Simply confess it before Him, and lay it down right then and there; ask Him to lead you in the correct way of doing it the next time you get the opportunity.

Should you find that you are doing what is right in these areas, give God "All" the glory, because it belongs to Him. The first thing we need to know is that Christian living is not something that we can do alone.  We need to have the power of God to be able to live in the way that He has taught us to.  That is why the Christian way of life is a "Supernatural living."  We should understand that we can't take any credit for these good things.  The Apostle Paul realized this and spoke forth the truth for every one of us.

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Romans 7:18-19 (NKJV)

Our part in doing the will of God is being willing to do it.  If we allow God to do what He wants, in us, on us, and through us, we will be very successful in doing exactly what He has asked of us, and we will shine bright in our Christian witness.  Our actions will always speak louder than our words, so its really important to think about what we are doing and to ask ourselves, "Is this bringing honor to God?"

In Part II of this devotional series we will begin to look upon the first way to honor God.

I want to encourage you today to take some time and pray with God - let Him know that you are completely willing to allow him to shape and form your life.  Come into agreement with the plan that He has chosen for your life, and be willing to glorify Him in everything you do today.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn with regard to following God's Word (precepts) according to Proverbs 22:4?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to allow God to be the potter and let Him continue to form you into the perfect vessel that He has in mind?

APPLICATION: Read the Word of God daily - meditate upon it, and ask yourself how you can apply it to your life.  Change your life to fit God's Word rather than changing God's Word to fit your life.

Father, Thank You for Your Word.  Thank You for the power that is contained within it.  Lord, as we dig deep into Your Word over the next series of devotionals, help me to see how I am to perform these duties that are outlined within Romans 12:9-21.  Show me areas where I need to be transformed and allow Your Word to change me.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
