A Thief In The Night

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 2Peter 3:10-11 (NKJV)

We are told in Scripture that one day without notice, the Lord will come back to claim His bride - the Church - all those who profess Him as Lord and Savior.  And, like a "thief in the night," He will gather us up into the heavens and we will be gone.  It will be as if we have been stolen by a thief in the night - but that couldn't be farther from the truth.  You see, Jesus isn't going to steal us - the fact is, you aren't stealing what you have already bought and paid for.

Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. Acts 20:28 (NKJV)

The analogy of a "Thief in the night" is one that was given to us to get our attention - we are to be ready at "Any" moment for His coming, and not caught off guard with respect to it.

Think about sleeping in our bed at night, and we are all snug and warm when SUDDENLY ...CRASH!  A horrific noise has awoken you and you are very startled and caught off guard - something is happening and you don't even have time to react before a thief is in your home and is upon you.

Well the fact is, the time it took you to read this last paragraph will actually take much longer than what it will for Christ to come get us.   In fact, according to Scripture, He will gather every one of us believers in a "Twinkling of an eye" (See 1Cor 15:52).  One second we will be here, and the next, we will be with Him.  There will be no chance to say a "Hail Mary prayer," or to get right with Him by asking for forgiveness.  There will be no chance to ask Him into your heart.

But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 1Corinthians 15:51-52 (NKJV)

It's amazing to me how we take so many things for granted in our lives.  Every day we can listen to the radio and hear of a fatal traffic accident and not even think twice about it as we hurry along to complete our busy day.  The person in that accident got up that morning and was thinking about what they had to do that day, or was thinking about what they would be doing the following weekend, and an hour later, they were face to face with God.

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, Hebrews 9:27 (NKJV)

Hey Christian, we need to remember, we are only here for a short time.  Our chance to do the work of God is but for a season, and that season is now - not tomorrow!  I want to challenge you to take a look at the people driving next to you today when you are driving down the road - contemplate within your mind as to whether they are saved or not.  If their life ended today, would they be eternally saved, or lost.  Would they be spending eternity with God in His presence, or separated forever.

Let's not spend our lives just merely attempting to satisfy our flesh.  Let's allow God do a mighty work on us, in us, and through us.  Because it might just be the difference of life or death for another person we know.

I don't want to finish my life one day only to regret not taking the time to speak to a family member, a next-door neighbor or my co-worker.  I have spoken to many of them, and I have had them respond by saying, "No thank you" to the offer of knowing Jesus as Lord - but that is not the saddest thing - the saddest thing is that there are some people that I haven't taken the time to even ask yet.

Ask God to use you today in whatever way He chooses, and be willing to say what He is prompting you to say.  It will be their choice as to how they may answer - it always was - just as it was your choice to be used.  Choose wisely.

STUDY QUESTION:  According to Hebrews 9:27, what happens immediately after we die?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you looking each day to serve the Lord in the greatest capacity possible?

APPLICATION: Ask God whom He would have you speak to today.  Share your faith, and your testimony about what Jesus has done for you.  Ask the Lord to give you the boldness.  The worse thing that can happen to you is that you feel embarrassed.  The worse thing that can happen to them is that they say, "no thanks."  But at least give them the chance to do that.

Father, Thank You for saving me.  Thank You for giving me hope and peace of mind as to where I will spend eternity.  Help me today to be used in a great way Lord.  Speak through me to whomever you will so that I may proclaim the great mercies and grace You have bestowed upon me.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
