The Lord is My Shepherd-Part VII
Seventeen Promises & Blessings From God

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His names' sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD  Forever. Psalms 23:1-6 (NKJV)

We are looking at a devotional series based on Psalm 23 and the promises and blessings that are contained within it. A quick read of this scripture can immediately bring a calming peace and a bright hope regardless of what we are facing.  God knew this and provided it for exactly this reason.  As we break down the verses contained within it, we find a total of 17-promises and blessings that we are given as His children.  In our first six parts of this devotional we looked at the first 14-promises and blessings, which were:

1.    The Lord is my Shepherd:  We are God's Children
2.    I Shall not want:  Our needs will be supplied.
3.    He makes me to lie down in green pastures:  We will be given rest by God.
4.    He leads me besides the still waters:  God will refresh us.
5.    He restores my soul: God will heal us.
6.    He leads me in the path of righteousness:  God will guide our paths.
7.    For His names' sake:  God will give us purpose for everything we do.
8.    Yeah though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death:  God will complete us and transform us with testing in our life.
9.     I will fear no evil:  God will protect His children.
10.   For You are with me:  God is faithful to His children and to His Word.
11.   Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me: God will discipline us in love.
12.   You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: God gives His children hope.
13.   You anoint my head with oil: We have been set apart by God.
14.   My cup runs over: God gives to us in abundance.

Let's take a look at our next set of promises and blessings.

15.    The Promise & Blessing: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life:

What's it mean to us?    God wants to bless His Children.  He gives us abundance and from this blessing we are to bless others liberally and with happy heartsgiving all glory and honor to God for what we do.  Colossians 3:17 tells us; that whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Everything we have belongs to God - we are simply the stewards of these things.  Our homes, cars, money and skills all belong to the Lord - we are to use these things to bless others.  When we do, we in turn receive many blessing - some we will receive here on earth, while others will be in Heaven.

God knew that money would be a stumbling block for mankind, so He spoke strongly and frequently on it throughout the Bible.  In Malachi we are taught the principles of tithing the firstfruits of our money.  This is the only place in the Bible where God says, "Try Me" or "Test Me" in this.  If we would simply bring in the first portion of every dollar we get to the Church, then there would be plenty for everyone - all would be blessed!

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the LORD of hosts,  "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. Malachi 3:10 (NKJV)

16.    The Promise & Blessing: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD:

What's it mean to us?    God provides "Security" for His children for the future.  Knowing that we have been promised to dwell in the house of the Lord should be at the forefront of every Christian's mind.  When we realized that we are here for just a short amount of time, and then we will be with the Lord, we will rethink our plans for how we live this life.  Jesus asked us a pointed question when He said, "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?"  The answer is that we would profit "NOTHING!"  And we wouldn't be dwelling in the house of the Lord either.  We don't need to be fixed on conquering this world for its wealth or anything else it has to offer because these are but fools gold.  We need to know that we will be dwelling with the Lord soon, so lets make use of the time we have left here on earth.
I want to encourage you today to think about these 2-blessings.  Meditate upon them because they, like the previous six, are huge to us who call Jesus Savior.

In our next part of this devotional series, we will look at the last promise and blessing that God has made to His children within this great Psalm.

STUDY QUESTION: What two promises and blessings are contained within this devotional?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: How do these promises and blessings impact your view today?

APPLICATION: Keep these promises and blessings at the front of your mind for when you are facing tough times, because they will encourage you and help you to see the big picture and understand that our God is a mighty God who saves and provides.

Father, Thank You for goodness and mercy.  Thank You for the security that you have given me - that I should be called a child of God.  Help me to remember that my life here is just for a short time, and that I am to use this time wisely for things that will impact eternity, not just for the things that are temporary.  In Jesus precious name, amen...
