The Lord is My Shepherd-Part IV
Seventeen Promises & Blessings From God

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever. Psalms 23:1-6 (NKJV)

We are looking at a devotional series based on Psalm 23 and the promises and blessings that are contained within it. A quick read of this scripture can immediately bring a calming peace and a bright hope regardless of what we are facing. God knew this and provided it for exactly this reason. As we break down the verses contained within it, we find a total of 17-promises and blessings that we are given as His children. In our first three parts of this devotional we looked at the first 8-promises and blessings, which were:

1. The Lord is my Shepherd: We are God's Children
2. I Shall not want: Our needs will be supplied.
3. He makes me to lie down in green pastures: We will be given rest by God.
4. He leads me besides the still waters: God will refresh us.
5. He restores my soul: God will heal us.
6. He leads me in the path of righteousness: God will guide our paths.
7. For His name's sake: God will give us purpose for everything we do.
8. Yeah though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death: God will complete us and transform us with testing in our life.

Let's take a look at our next set of promises and blessings.

9. The Promise & Blessing: I will fear no evil:

What's it mean to us? God protects His Children. All we have to do is to place our faith and trust into Him, and we can have peace and assurance that we will be safe and secure. Jesus told us in John 10:29 that no one can snatch us from His hand. And in 1 John 4:4 we are told, "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

We don't need to fear anything because God is always with us, and He is much more powerful than Satan and his demons. Anything that happens to us has to go through Him first. So if we trust Him, then we can know that we need not fear evil.

Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Proverbs 30:5 (NKJV)

10. The Promise & Blessing: For You are with me:

What's it mean to us? God is faithful! We can know with full confidence that God is with us, and will never leave us alone. He is faithful when we are faithless. Our faith is constantly being challenged daily, and it is being strengthened as well. I find that my faith is increasing incredibly because I am finely figuring out that my faith is not in my abilities, but it is in the Lord's. That makes it a lot easier to have faith.

Look, it is either God's will and it will be done, or it isn't and it won't be done. So why worry or fret when that will never change anything. Place your faith in God, and abide in Him - if it is His will, then know it is done - that's proper faith.

For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)

If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself. 2 Timothy 2:13 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today to think about these 2-blessings. Meditate upon them because they, like the previous six, are huge to us who call Jesus Savior.

In our next part of this devotional series, we will look at the next set of promises and blessings that God has made to His children within this great Psalm.

STUDY QUESTION: What two promises and blessings are contained within this devotional?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: How do these promises and blessings impact your view today?

APPLICATION: Keep these promises and blessings at the front of your mind for when you are facing tough times, because they will encourage you and help you to see the big picture and understand that our God is a mighty God who saves and provides - what a peace!

Father, Thank You for these two blessings. Lord, Thank You for protecting me, and for being faithful even when I am faithless. I pray for You wisdom and guidance today in all that I do. Help me to continue to think upon these great promises and blessings throughout today and for each day I have struggles and tests. In Jesus precious name, amen...
