The Lord is My Shepherd-Part III
Seventeen Promises & Blessings From God

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever. Psalms 23:1-6 (NKJV)

We are looking at a devotional series based on Psalm 23 and the promises and blessings that are contained within it. A quick read of this scripture can immediately bring a calming peace and a bright hope regardless of what we are facing. God knew this and provided it for exactly this reason. As we break down the verses contained within it, we find a total of 17-promises and blessings that we are given as His children. In our first two parts of this devotional we looked at the first 6-promises and blessings, which were:

1. The Lord is my Shepherd: We are Gods Children
2. I Shall not want: Our needs will be supplied
3. He makes me to lie down in green pastures: We will be given rest by God
4. He leads me besides the still waters: God will refresh us
5. He restores my soul: God will heal us
6. He leads me in the path of righteousness: God will guide our paths

Let's take a look at our next set of promises and blessings.

7. The Promise & Blessing: For His name's sake:

What's it mean to us? God gives us purpose for every activity that we do under the sun (Son). We do it for the glory of His name - to bring honor to our Lord. The enemy will attempt to get us to glorify our abilities and talents so that we get credit from others.

We need to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. We need to ask ourselves, "Is this bringing glory and honor to God, or is it bringing glory and honor to Satan?" All that will be left when our life is over are those things we have done for our Lord. Make it a point to keep asking yourself that question and you will see that your actions will change as a result, and God will be honored.

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17 (NKJV)

8. The Promise & Blessing: Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death:

What's it mean to us? God will finish that work within us that He started when we were "Born Again." (See Phil 1:6) We are told throughout scripture, that we will be tested in our faith. It is this testing that produces patience and eventually perfection. If we didn't have times of testing, we would not grow spiritually. Remember, we are to be transformed into the image of God. This process will take our entire life, and even then it will not be complete until we see Him face-to-face.

The next time you find yourself in a valley - a place where you are facing a trial or temptation - ask the Lord for assistance, wisdom and discernment. Know that you are being tested, but in this, a great opportunity is possible to serve and glorify God.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today to think about these 2-blessings. Meditate upon them because they, like the previous six, are huge to us who call Jesus Savior.

In our next part of this devotional series, we will look at the next set of promises and blessings that God has made to His children within this great Psalm.

STUDY QUESTION: What two promises and blessings are contained within this devotional?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: How do these promises and blessings impact your view today?

APPLICATION: Keep these promises and blessings at the front of your mind for when you are facing tough times, because they will encourage you and help you to see the big picture and understand that our God is a mighty God who saves and provides - what a peace!

Father, Thank You for these two promises and blessings. Lord I know that there are times when I don't understand things, but you have reassured me that there is a purpose in it. And I know that I sometimes complain or fear those times of testing, and yet You are present with me, and are doing a work in me as well. I want to say, "Thank You" for these times today. In Jesus precious name, amen...
