The Lord is My Shepherd-Part II
Seventeen Promises & Blessings From God

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever. Psalms 23:1-6 (NKJV)

We are looking at a devotional series based on Psalm 23 and the promises and blessings that are contained within it. A quick read of this scripture can immediately bring a calming peace and a bright hope regardless of what we are facing. God knew this and provided it for exactly this reason. As we break down the verses contained within it, we find a total of 17-promises and blessings that we are given as His children. In our first part of this devotional we looked at the first three promises, which were:

1. The Lord is my Shepherd: We are His Children
2. I Shall not want: Our needs are supplied
3. He makes me to lie down in green pastures: We are given rest

Let's take a look at our next set of promises and blessings.

4. The Promise & Blessing: He leads me besides the still waters:

What's it mean to us? God refreshes us! He will give us times of refreshment as we repent from our sin. And He will give us refreshment as walk with Him daily. God wants to lead and guide us in everything we do, and when we talk to Him about everything and allow Him to lead and provide, then we will find that we have everything we need to do the job. In those times where we follow and we get exhausted, He is faithful to refresh us.

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, Acts 3:19 (NKJV)

5. The Promise & Blessing: He restores my soul:

What's it mean to us? The Lord Heals! He is the only one who can heal us spiritually, emotionally and physically. Only God can mend our broken heart, and give us what we need to be complete. Our health is paramount to our ministry - as it suffers, so does our ministry to others.

We need to partake in communion with the body of believers - as we do, we are restored and healed in every way! Go and spend some time talking with God - acknowledge what He has done on that cross for you and tell Him "Thank You Lord." Watch how He heals you.

He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. Psalms 147:3 (NKJV)

6. The Promise & Blessing: He leads me in the path of righteousness:

What's it mean to us? God guides our paths. As we seek the Lord in all of our ways, He is quick to give us guidance in our paths - to keep us safe and blessed. Even if we don't understand, He will guide and lead us (See Proverbs 3:5,6). All too often we, like the prodigal son, go our own way as we walk the path that we have chosen.

We need to seek God for direction and not be looking to the left or the right. This is exactly how the enemy gets us to take our eyes of the Lord. Before you know it, years have passed and we have squandered precious time and opportunities to share the Gospel message. Discipline yourself to stay focused on the things of God.

This also comes from the LORD of hosts, Who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance. Isaiah 28:29 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today to think about these 3-blessings. Meditate upon them because they, like the previous three, are huge to us who call Jesus Savior.

In our next part of this devotional series, we will look at the next set of promises and blessings that God has made to His children within this great Psalm.

STUDY QUESTION: What three promises and blessings are contained within this devotional?

Father, Thank You for these blessings in my life. Thank You for the refreshing, restoration and guidance each day. Lord please give me wisdom and discernment today for each situation I face. Help me to see what You see when I look at these circumstances. I pray for the strength and courage to deal with these things in the way You would have me to. In Jesus precious name, amen...
