A Servants Heart-Part VIII

A Servants Heart-Part VIII

And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)

We have been looking at a series of devotionals titled, A Servants Heart.  In this series we have been looking at what it means to have a proper servants heart as defined by God.  We cannot properly serve others in the way our Lord demonstrated without first having this type of heart.  And so we have been breaking down Colossians 3:12-14, which God has given to us to show us what we must possess before we can properly serve others in His name, which we have been called to do in Colossians 3:17.

In our last devotional we looked at the last of the 8-qualities that we must Put on each day before we can properly serve others.  The eight-qualities we looked at were:

1.    A heart of compassion
2.    Kindness
3.    Humility
4.    Meekness (Gentleness)
5.    Longsuffering (Patience)
6.    Bearing with one another
7.    Forgiving each other
8.    Love

What we would like to look at in this last devotional is how these qualities should be marking the believers lifestyle.  As they mark our lifestyle, they will give us 3-essentials for living the Christian life and for serving others with an Agape love and a proper heart.  The first essential that we will be given once we have Put on these qualities is that:

1.    We should have the Peace of Christ ruling our hearts.

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Colossians 3:15 (NKJV)

To have the peace of God Ruling in our hearts means that we will be able to know what God wants largely because of the peace that is ruling within our heart during in the decision making process.  But we cannot rely on the feelings of our heart alone, we must now combine the second essential as well to truly make our decisions, and that is:

2.    We should have The Word of Christ dwelling in us. (Col 3:16)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16 (NKJV)

Gods Word is ALWAYS the final authority.  It is good to have a peace of mind with a decision, but if it contradicts Gods Word, then STOP!  Always make sure to use the Word of God for the final step in the decision making process.  The last essential that we will have once we have Put on the qualities outlined in Colossians 3:12-14 is that:

3.    We should have The Name of Christ in mind with every action we do (Col 3:17)

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17 (NKJV)

We need to make it our main goal to glorify God in everything we do while we are here in these temporary bodies, and on this temporary earth.  It doesnt matter whether it is in word or deed; we need to do it in the name of Jesus bringing glory to His name!

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1Corinthians 10:31 (NKJV)

We need to ask ourselves 3-questions regarding any activityincluding our serving of the body:

Q:    Can I thank the Lord In what Im doing or in how I am doing it?
Q:    Will God be glorified through what I am doing, and how I am doing it?
Q:    Will someone be tripped up by what I am doing, or how I am doing it?

God has called all of us to serve others, and we can only do this with a proper heart that possesses these qualities (virtues) of God.  We do this with Agape love, and we need to always remember that Agape love is always centered on the needs and welfare of the ones being loved.  It is willing to pay whatever personal price necessary to meet those needs and foster that welfare for them.

I want to encourage you to serve others as if you are serving the Lord.  If you do, you will always have a willingness to go the extra effort, to endure, to forgive, and to know that you are giving back unto the Lord in a loving way.

STUDY QUESTION: What 3-essentials should we possess once we have Put on the 8-qualities as outlined in Colossians 3:12-14?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to Put on these eight-qualities each day as you Put on Christ?

APPLICATION: Seek the Lord in prayer each day, and ask that He would give you these qualities abundantly in His Love.  Now go and shower everyone around you with them.

Father, Thank You for the qualities and the essential attributes that are derived from putting these qualities on.  Help me today to walk with You as I have the peace of Christ and Your Word richly dwelling in me, and as I do everything as if I am doing it unto You.  In Jesus precious name, amen&
