A Servants Heart-Part VII

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down ones life for his friends. John 15:13 (NKJV)

We have been looking at a series of devotionals titled, A Servants Heart.  In this series we have been looking at what it means to have a proper servants heart as defined by God.  We cannot properly serve others in the way our Lord demonstrated without first having this type of heart.  And so we have been breaking down Colossians 3:12-14, which God has given to us to show us what we must possess before we can properly serve others in His name, which we have been called to do in Colossians 3:17.

In our last devotional we looked at the 7th of the 8-qualities that we must Put on each day before we can properly serve others.  The first seven-qualities we looked at were:

1.    A heart of compassion
2.    Kindness
3.    Humility
4.    Meekness (Gentleness)
5.    Longsuffering (Patience)
6.    Bearing with one another
7.    Forgiving each other

Lets continue to look at these 8-qualities.  The last quality we must Put on, is:

8.    Love

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:14 (NKJV)

We have talked about 7-previoius qualities that we must put on to have a Servants heart, but without Love we cannot effectively put these things on.  We will never enjoy mutual fellowship with other people through compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, or patience unless we can Love one another.  We wont be able to Bear with one another, nor will we be able to Forgive each other unless we have the ability to Love one another.

In fact, if we wanted to sum up every single virtue that we have discussed in these series of devotionals that we have been looking at, we could simply sayyou guessed it, LOVE ONE ANOTHER!  This is exactly what Jesus demonstrated when He was here on earth, and it is exactly what He commanded us to do when He gave us the Great Commandment.

And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment.  The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:30-31 (NKJV)

If we were to try to Put on or utilize any of these qualities that we have covered without love, it would only be a legalistic action, and any service or worship that was done in the name of God would not be accepted as True Worship by God.  All service in the name of God must flow from Lovefor God is love.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 sums up how important love is to the Christian man or woman.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 1Corinthians 13:1-3 (NKJV)

This love is not the type of love that we manifest in the flesh, it only comes from God, and it is called Agape Love.  We will look at this more in depth in an upcoming devotional called, Let Love be Without Hypocrisy.

In our last devotional on this series we will look at 3-priorities that Paul gives to the believers who possess these 8-qualities.

I want to encourage you to allow the Love of God to flow through you to others who are in your life.  If you think of yourself as a garden hose, and God as the source of water, then you will have a perfect picture of how this works.  You dont have to struggle to provide love, because it comes from God aloneyou are just the conduit that it flows through.

God wants to use each of His children to spread His love onto others, and we have been given the free will to either allow this, or disallow it.  God says, that if we love Him, we will remain in His love, and His love will remain in us.  So the last question for us to answer is, Do you love God?

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to Love?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is Gods love remaining in You?  Do you love God?  Are you allowing Gods love to flow through you to others?

APPLICATION: Ask God to love others through you.  Dont quench the Holy Spirit by not allowing God to love others through you.

Father, Thank You for Your love.  Lord I would like for You to love others through me today.  Help me see them in the way that You do Lord, and give me a compassion for them.  In Jesus precious name, amen&

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
