A Servants Heart-Part III

"With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment; But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you," Says the LORD, your Redeemer. Isaiah 54:8 (NKJV)

We have been looking at a series of devotionals titled, "A Servants Heart."  In this series we have been looking at what it means to have a proper servants heart as defined by God.  We cannot properly serve others in the way our Lord demonstrated without first having this type of heart.  And so we have been breaking down Colossians 3:12-14, which God has given to us to show us what we must possess before we can properly serve others in His name, which we have been called to do in Colossians 3:17.

In our last devotional we looked at the first of 8-qualities that we must "Put on" each day before we can properly serve others.  The first quality we looked at was:

1.    A heart of compassion

Lets take a look at the second quality that we must, "Put on."

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, Colossians 3:12(NKJV)

2.    Were to "Put on" Kindness

The word, "Kindness" used in this scripture is the Greek word "chrestotes," khray-stot´-ace

This is the Greek term that refers to the grace (Unmerited favor) that passes through the believer.  It is a usefulness, i.e. morally, excellence in character or demeanor gentleness, good(-ness), kindness.

To be a "Kind" person means that we are going to be as concerned about our neighbors good as we are about our own--we love our neighbor as we love our self.  Psalm 117:2 speaks of God's kindness towards His Children as it says, "For His merciful kindness is great toward us," but God's kindness is not limited to just those who believe, trust and obey, as we can clearly see by Jesus' teachings in Luke.

But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Luke 6:35 (NKJV)

So we can clearly see that God is kind, even to the ungrateful and evil people.

Q:    Why is this?

A:    Because this is what leads the lost to come and know Him.

We see this principal being taught in 1 Peter chapter 3 with respect to Husbands and Wives.  Notice in these scriptures that it is the kind actions by the believer that are done in love that win the favor of the lost, or strayed.

Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear. 1Peter 3:1 (NKJV)

Notice the end of this verse says, "They observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear."  That fear that is being spoken of here is a "Respect" or "Reverence" for God--this is what it means to "Fear the Lord."

As we are kind to others, whether they reciprocate or not, we are doing this unto the Lord, and we are showing our fear, or "respect" for Him.  Knowing that you are doing this for God makes it a pleasure, not a burden or drudgery.

I want to encourage you today to be "Kind" to all whom God brings your way.  Take a second to think before you speak or act when they are mean, foul, crass, selfish, or indifferent to your beliefs.  Keep in mind the end-run and whom you are serving.  When you fully understand that it is Christ whom you serve, and the person is simply receiving His kindness through you--you will be truly blessed to be used by God in the greatest capacity, and others will in "deed" know Him because of your selflessness.

In our next part, we will continue to look at the 8-qualities that we need to "Put on" to have a servants heart.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Isaiah 45:8, what attribute does God display that He shows us mercy upon us?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to be kind to everyone whom God brings into your life, regardless of their attitude, actions, or refusal to accept your kindness?

APPLICATION: Ask God to give you an Agape love for everyone today--it is only through Him that we can consistently be kind to others.

Father, Thank You for Your loving kindness that leads to mercy.  Father I purpose in my heart to be kind to everyone You bring my way.  Help me to love them with an Agape style love Lord.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
