What Is Faith-Part VI

What Is Faith-Part VI
Walking on Water

And He said to her, Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Luke 8:48 (NKJV)

In Part V of this series titled, "What is Faith" we finished answering the question, "What is Living Faith?"  We learned that it is:

1.    It is Confidence, dependence, and belief in another persons strengths, abilities, and decisions.

2.    Taking God at His Word

We looked at just 4-ways we can practically walk in our "Living Faith," which were in the proper disciplining of our children; in our tithing our money to the church; in our helping the poor in times of need, and in our prayer life.

In Part VI of this devotional, we are going to look at a couple of examples of "Living Faith" or "Walking in Faith."  The first example I want to look at is that of the Israelites when they had been freed from the bondage of slavery.  We pick up the scene in Exodus Chapter 14.

Example #1 The Israelites facing the Red Sea

And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD. Then they said to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt?" Exodus 14:10-11 (NKJV)

So these people had seen God's mighty hand upon their life; they had seen the miracles of the plagues that were brought upon Egypt.  And as a result of God's miracles, they had been rescued from Egypt, but now the Egyptians were coming to bring them back.  They doubted God's provision and were afraid of what they were facing--they complained and cried out to God.

Moses tells them,  "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace." (See Ex 14:13,14)

They stood there facing the Red Sea and they had the Egyptian army barreling down upon them, but God didn't want them standing there in fear of what they faced.  In fact He wanted them to keep walking in "Faith" right into the very thing that they were facing in fear.  So God said to Moses, "Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward". (Ex 14:15)

Are we any different than these Israelites when we sit or stand in our misery or fear of what we are facing in our life?  We need to get up and continue to walk forward in "Faith" right into that thing that is causing us to doubt and be anxious.

It can be an illness, a bad marriage relationship, unemployment, the economy, our belief in the ability of our political leaders, etc...

It can be anything that is causing us to be afraid, or to be anxiously nervous, or even angry--those things that lead us to believe that we are a victim--because we're not. We too, just like the Israelites, need to keep going right into those things, and we need to place our faith into the Living God--He has a perfect plan.

Example #2   The Wind and The Waves--Walking in Faith, verses Sinking in Fear

Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water."

So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" (See Matthew 14:25-31)

Peter walked on water in faith--it wasn't until he looked at everything that was facing him, that he doubted, and began to sink.

Q:    What are you looking at today that is causing you to sink?
Q:    Is it finances-your marriage--your children--your relationship with another family member, or friend?
Q:    Is it a drug, alcohol, pornography, an affair, an addiction to food, or the glittery things of this world.
Q:    Is it simply your lack of faith in Jesus promise to provide for you?

I don't care what it is because one is as debilitating and bad as the other.

I want to encourage you to take you eyes off of that which is hindering you and causing anxiety, or fear, and doubt, and put your eyes back upon God today.

Q:    What's keeping you from walking towards Jesus right now?
Q:    What's keeping you from reaching out in faith and believing that God wants to deliver you from what is keeping you in bondage right now?

Are you "ALL IN?" Or are you just throwing enough chips on the table with regards to your walk with God to get through?  Are you all in when it comes to trusting God? Do you believe All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work?  (2Timothy 3:16-17)  Do you believe that God has a specific plan for your life--plans for a future, and a hope?  Do you want to Please God?

I will close with this devotional series with this; God has a specific plan for your life today.  We need to walk in faith regardless of what we face today, because if we do, we will be rewarded.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

Hey Christian, I want to please God!  I'm "All IN!"  How about you?

STUDY QUESTION: What does Hebrew 11:6 say about pleasing God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you desire to please God?

APPLICATION:  Trust God, and walk in faith today.

Father, Thank You for the illustrations that You have given to me today that inspire me to walk in faith, and to faithfully live by Your Word.  I love You and I trust You.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
