What Is Faith-Part I
Saving Faith & The Faith

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV)

Q:    What is Faith?

Faith could be described as "A conviction of truth without tangible proof."  The Bible defines faith as, "The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (See Heb. 11:1).  For a Christian, to have faith is to believe God's Word before it comes to pass.

Faith is a big word and it has many meanings.  Faith is one of those words that are really limited in the English language.  It is kind of like the word, "Love."  It really doesn't convey what we want to say at times.  For instance, I could say, "I love my wife."  Or, I could say, "I love hot dogs."  Not the same kind of love.

And so it is with the word "Faith."  We continually hear the word "Faith" in our Christian walk.  Truth is, that there are really 4-types of "Faith." I would like to take a look at these 4-types of faith and then focus on one of them, which is our "Living Faith."

Let's take a look at the first type of faith.

1.    Saving Faith

"Saving Faith" is a special type of faith that is given to us by God.  This faith is a gift and cannot be earned or manufactured apart from God giving it to us.  This type of faith is given to all unbelievers so that they have the ability to believe and receive Salvation from God by His Grace, but they must exercise this faith.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8,9 (NKJV)

So, our salvation is a gift from God, and it is given to us through "Faith."  It is not something that we can earn.  We need to abandon any thoughts that our salvation is because of a particular religion, our good deeds, or any works that we have performed.  It isn't by our moral standard of living or by our being baptized either.  It is by grace (Unmerited favor) and it is through the medium of faith. It is a gift-pure and simple.

Example:

Q:    What if I gave you a Birthday or Christmas gift-but then I asked you to give me money for that gift, or to work it off?

A:    Then it would not be a gift anymore!

And that is the same way it is with regard to our salvation--God gave us eternal life in Christ Jesus as a gift.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 (NKJV)

There are many people who would try to add to this, saying that we must do this or that to be saved, but there is nothing to add to what God has provided, and what Jesus did on the Cross.  I always think of the acronym for faith when someone tries to change or add something to what we must do in order to be saved.

"Forsaking All I Trust in Him"

The second type of faith is:

2.    The Faith

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, Jude 20 (NKJV)

When we say, "The Faith," it is referring to the whole spiritual realm of Christianity.  So when we say we believe in "The Christian Faith" we are speaking about our doctrine;  our beliefs and our behavior.  It's a set of beliefs--and for us as Christians those beliefs should translate to changed behavior.  We can see an example of how we should behave in Chapter 2 of the Book of Titus.

I want to encourage you to stay away from any man-made-belief that uses the cover of calling themselves Christian that would add to, or take away from, what the Bible tells us about attaining salvation.   There are no new prophetic messages, or new revelations apart from the Word of God as contained in the Bible.  If someone wants to tell you about another book or magazine--walk away, because you've been given everything you need in the Word of God.

Some false religions will tell you that you cannot understand the Bible or know how to interpret God's word without their help and by using their book or magazine, but this is not what Scripture tells us.  We are clearly told that The Holy Spirit will guide us and teach us everything we need to know as we read the Word of God.

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1John 2:27 (NKJV)

Our Christian Faith is that our Salvation is from God through Jesus Christ, and we are guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit--The Godhead 3-In-One.

In Part II of this study on Faith, we will look at 2-more types of faith.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the Biblical definition of Faith?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you place your faith in Jesus Christ to be your personal Lord and Savior?

APPLICATION: Share this message with someone after praying about whom the Lord would want you to share with.

Father, I want to say Thank You for giving me the faith to believe in Your Son, Jesus.  Thank You Jesus for dying on the cross to pay for my sins.  It is my desire for You to be the Lord of my life, and to follow Your ways and to be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Help to know Your ways as I read Your Word.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
