Witnessing 101-Sharing Jesus-Part I

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14 (NKJV)

About a month ago, we looked at a series of devotionals titled, "The Great Commission."  In that series of devotionals we looked at what the Great Commission was, and we found out that we, as Christian men and women, were commanded by Jesus to go out and make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.  We learned that we were to teach these "New Recruits" to observe all that Jesus had commanded.

What I would like to look at over the next couple of devotionals is two things.

The first thing I would like to look at is 5-common problems people face in sharing the Gospel message.  These are some excuses that frequently come up with people who become hindered in sharing the Gospel as a result.

The second thing I would like to look at is a proven outlined plan of scripture that we can share with the unbeliever, called the "Romans Road."  In this outline contained within the Book of Romans, we will see everything that needs to be addressed from our being sinners, to how to be saved, and finally we will see scripture detailing an assurance of our salvation as well.

Before we get into those two things, I would like to say that witnessing to others is the privilege that God gives us of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others.  As we have studied before, Jesus gave us this Great Commission.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen." Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)

Jesus' disciples took this commandment seriously, and they went forth sharing everything that they had heard and witnessed, and we should do the same.  As these disciples obeyed, we are told that they were given "great power" to do this, and they were also given "great grace."  So we can be confident that we too, will be equipped sufficiently by our Lord.

And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. Acts 4:33 (NKJV)

I like to remind people frequently that we are just the "garden hose," and God supplies the water of His Word through those who are obedient and allow Him.  Once we have been faithful to read the Word of God, the Holy Spirit brings it back up to our memory and gives us exactly what we need to share in "Love" with those whom were witnessing to.

The next thing we need to know is that we witness in 2-ways, and they are:

1.    Our Life
2.    Our Words

Our Life:  People will watch our actions as much if not more than the words we share.  It is important for us to apply what we have been given with regard to God's Word.  As we apply what we have read daily, this will start that transformation process, and this change is what people really notice.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)

Our Words:  Our words can also be the basis for our sharing the Gospel Message, because we can share our testimony with others.  When we tell them of our past, and what God has delivered us from.  This weighs in very powerfully, especially when it is backed up with our actions of Christ-like living.

When we witness, we will do so using 2-tools, and they are:

1.    Gods Word
2.    Prayer

God's Word:  It is important for us to read our Bible daily.  We are told in Ephesians 6, that it is our only offensive weapon, and we are told in Hebrews:

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)

We are also told in Isaiah 55:11, that the word that goes forth from God shall not return void, and that it will prosper for which He sent it.  That's a strong promise; so don't get dissuaded when someone doesn't initially respond to you when you share scripture.  Trust God, when He says, "Its working."

The last thing I want to share with you about witnessing to others is to "Pray."  Bring everything to the Lord in prayer.  Ask Him to give you the proper words to share, and the power to say what needs to be said.  God honors fervent praying.

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16 (NKJV)

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to walk in faith because God is faithful, and He will guide you in every step.  It might feel a little bit uncomfortable at first, and the enemy might tell you that you are not cut out for it, but he is a liar.  Besides, it is God doing everything through you--you just get to be blessed in the process.

Remember, ministry flows through relationships.  Go get em!

STUDY QUESTION: What are the 2-ways we witness?  What are the 2-tools we must use?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to obey God and step out in faith and share the Gospel message?

APPLICATION: Stop after reading this, and pray that God would bring an opportunity to you today to share the Gospel message, and that He would give you everything needed to accomplish what He wants done.

Father Thank You for allowing me to be a part of Your ministry.  Help me today by giving me every word that I am to share with others.  Give me the power and the ability to go out of my comfort zone.  Bring those people into my life today for a divine appointment.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
