Governed By God Part IV

God's Chosen People-Part IV

...Who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; Romans 9:4 (NKJV)

We've been looking at Romans 9:4 and seeing that the People of Israel were God's chosen people.  So far, we've looked at the first three things that were given to these Chosen people of God.

1.    They were Adopted into His family.
2.    They were given the Glory of God's presence in their lives.
3.    They were given Covenants & Laws.

We've also been looking at the parallels to these gifts and how each person who becomes a Christian is given the same things.

In Part IV of this series, we're going to look at the next thing that is given to those God has chosen.  And that is

4.    They were given the service of God

God delivered the people of Israel from the bondage of slavery so they may openly serve Him as their Lord.
And the LORD spoke to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD: "Let My people go, that they may serve Me. Exodus 8:1 (NKJV)

They would now be freed from anything that would stop them from serving Him.  As Christians, we too, have been freed from the bondage of slavery to sin.  And since we are no longer bound in the bondage of sin, we have been given a new nature so that we may walk in a Christ-like way.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?  Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:1-4 (NKJV)

So with this new freedom comes the decision as to whom we will serve.  The devil and his emissaries will temp us to follow them, but we must remember that this is the path that leads to destruction and death.  And it is the very one that led mankind into bondage in the first place.  We must therefore make a decision each day, and with each choice as to whom we will serve.  We should take a lesson from Joshua as he spoke to the Israelites about this same choice.

And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,& But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)

Q:    So how should we serve the Lord?
A:    We're to do everything as if we are doing it unto the Lord, knowing that from the Lord we will receive the reward of the inheritance; for it is the Lord we serve. (See Col 3:23).

    We serve the Lord out of our heart- we do it Heartily, which means:
*    Vigorously
*    With Gusto
*    Energetically
*    Thoroughly
*    Wholly
*    Jovially

Ephesians 5:1 tells us to be imitators of Christ.

Christ gave an example of how we were to serve others by laying His life down for them.  We should do the same by laying our lives down for others.  We should be living in a way that reflects our true beliefs of what we have been given by God.

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you today to think about those things that are awaiting you.  Don't get so fixed on what you think you need now to make you a happy soul; you have everything you need already.

In Part V of this devotional series we shall look at that last thing that Romans 9:4 tells us that was given to God's chosen people.

STUDY QUESTION: What does Romans 6:1-4 tell us with regards to living now that we have been saved by grace?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you still living in the bondage of sin, or are you living in the newness of life?

APPLICATION: Take the time today to remember what Jesus did no the cross of Calvary.  Choose whom you will serve this day.  Be an imitator of Christ.

Father, Thank You for Your Word.  Thank You for allowing me to serve You this day Lord.  Help me to continue to remember what has been given to me by accepting You, and of the things that await me when I see You.  In Jesus precious name, amen...
