God's Chosen People-Part III

God's Chosen People-Part III

They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God's adopted children. God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping him and receiving his wonderful promises. Romans 9:4 (NLT)

We've been looking at Romans 9:4 and seeing that the People of Israel were God's chosen people.  We've looked so far at the first two things that were given to these Chosen people of God.

1.    They were Adopted into His family
2.    They were given the Glory of God's presence in their lives.

We've also been looking at the parallels to these gifts and how each person who becomes a Christian is given the same things.

In Part III of this series, we're going to look at the next thing that is given to those God has chosen.  And that is the Covenants and Law.

3.    The Covenants & Laws:

A covenant is an agreement or contract.  We see God making the first covenant with Abraham in the Book of Genesis.

I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Genesis 12:2-3 (NKJV)

With that covenant God also gave His people laws to govern them and to live by.  Most people know of the 10 commandments  or laws of God, but there were actually 613 laws given by God to His chosen people.  If followed, these laws provided for a blessed life.  Although to follow the Law, meant to live in harmony with the will of God, Its main purpose was to show them that they could not keep them, and to point them to the need for a Savior.  Because the Law told us what not to do-We because of our sinful nature, wanted to do that very thing.

Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24 (NKJV)

Q:    So we can we can see the covenant and the laws that God gave Israel, but what about us as Christians; has God made a covenant with us as gentile believers?

A:    The answer is Yes!  It is the New Covenant.

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Hebrews 8:10 (NKJV)

This new covenant was spoken in prophecy by Jeremiah (See Jer. 31:33), and it is referring to what will happen when Israel acknowledges that Jesus is Lord in the Millennium.  It also deals with our salvation presently as Christians.  We see Jesus speaking of this new covenant as recorded in Matthew.

For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:28 (NKJV)

Every time we take communion at Church, we are doing it in remembrance of what Jesus did on the Cross; we are doing it in remembrance of the New Covenant (See 1Cor 11:25).  With this New Covenant, we accept His shed blood for the remission of our confessed sin.  He then writes His laws upon our hearts.  We now know what is right and what is wrong at any given moment; we don't need to go to a rulebook to see if we should do something or not, we have the Holy Spirit's leading in every situation.

And Jesus sums up these new commandments with two simple ones for us to remember and apply, because by obeying these two commandments we will fulfill all of the laws that were previously given by the Prophets to God's chosen people.

"You shall love the LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 22:37-40 (NKJV)

This is Great News to those who are trying to be declared righteous by keeping the laws of God in an attempt to earn salvation.  We have been given a New Covenant of Grace.  Why would we want to go back and try to earn our righteous standing by trying to keep rules?  The fact is that we can't, we'd only lose that free gift of grace if we tried.

For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God's grace. Galatians 5:4 (NLT)

Hey Christian, praise God for His grace and mercy, and be thankful for this new covenant that we have been given.  I want to encourage you today to share the good news of the Gospel Message.  Jesus Christ died that we might have life, and life more abundantly.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the New Covenant?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you trying to keep the laws of God to earn a righteous standing with Him?

APPLICATION: Understand that there is nothing you can add to God's grace to earn salvation.  It is only by God's unmerited, unearned favor that we have been given the free choice to accept His invitation to be saved.  We just simply need to receive it and turn from our ways and abide in His.

Father, Thank You for Your New Covenant, and Your new laws that are written on my heart. Thank You for Your grace and mercy. Help me to walk in all Your ways this day Lord.   In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
