Being Ready

Being Ready
In Season and Out

Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. 2 Timothy 4:2 (NKJV)

The Apostle Paul charged Timothy to preach the word!  He gave him instruction to go out and to pass on what he had been given.  In effect, Paul was doing with Timothy what Jesus had done with him on the road to Damascus.  Jesus had told him he was to go and spread the message of salvation and to teach the Gentile world.

As a Pastor, I take this charge as well.  But I believe as a Christian man or woman we are all to take it.  Jesus gave us instructions to go and proclaim the Gospel to all the nations as well.

Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." Luke 24:46-47 (NKJV)

We don't need to know everything in the Bible to begin to be used in God's ministry.  We just need to be available.  It's as easy as prayerfully reading our Bibles and then deciding we are willing to share what we have read.  Once God has provided an opportunity we simply need to be faithful to share.

I like to use the car washing analogy to help others share God's word. You fill up the bucket with water and cleaning solution.  Then you dip your sponge into the bucket and it immediately soaks up as much water as it can hold, until it is completely saturated.  Our minds are like the sponge, and the Word of God is like the water in the bucket, because it cleans up our sin and our life.

So we take the sponge and begin to wash, and as we do, it disperses the water once contained within it.  It is doing what it was designed to do.  The same is true when we share what we have learned in our Bible with others--we are doing what we are designed to do.

Now we would never dip our sponge in the wash bucket 70 times in a row without applying it to the car.  This would be silly, and would accomplish nothing.  It is the same thing as our learning more and more about the Bible but never applying or sharing it.

Paul told Timothy to be ready to preach the Word in season and out of season, which means to be ready whenever, including in the case of an emergency.  As we read we store up knowledge and we prepare ourselves to help others in times of need.  He also told Timothy to preach the Word, not his "opinions."  We all have an opinion, but God's word divides fact from fable, and fiction from non-fiction.  If we give an opinion, let's be sure to clarify it is just an opinion.

It's important to remember; we don't have to know everything, but we can surely share the things we do know.  If you come up against questions and you don't know the answer, then simply tell them you don't know but you would be happy to look into it.  You might even ask them if they have a Bible, and suggest if they would be willing to look for the answer.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon this today.  Let's determine today to share something we have learned in our Bible study time.  Let's seek the Holy Spirit to empower us to be bold in our sharing.  It will start with our willing hearts and our seeking the Lord in prayer.  Watch what happens as someone comes into your life, and you are able to share the very thing you just learned.

STUDY QUESTION: What two things does Paul tell Timothy to do in 2 Timothy 4:2?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to read daily, and share what you have learned as opportunities present themselves?

APPLICATION: Let's start today by praying to the Lord to help us understand His Word, and to bring about a chance to share it.  Watch and see how awesome and faithful He is to answer your prayer.

Let's pray...

Father, please help me to understand everything I read this day from Your Word.  Give me the opportunity to share it with others.  May it be a blessing in their lives, and may it help me to grow in my faith and my knowledge.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
