Where Are You?

Where Are You?

Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you? Genesis 3:9 (NKJV)

So here's the setting - God is calling out to Adam who is hiding in the Garden of Eden after he had sinned.  This could be the first recorded instance of the game "Hide and seek."  On the surface it looks as though Adam is actually hiding from God successfully, but this is not the case. God's Word tells us, "The eyes of the LORD are everywhere keeping watch on the wicked and the good" (Prov. 15:3).  And we see this very truth again in Hebrews.

And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.. Hebrews 4:13 (NKJV)

God knew where Adam was and He knew exactly what Adam had done.  He wasn't looking for Adam to give Him information as to his whereabouts  - He was looking for Adam to identify where he was at spiritually.   God wanted Adam to confess to Him.  You see, when we confess sin, then sin loses its grip upon our life.

God saw everything Adam did and He watches us as well.  He watches like a concerned parent watching a child riding a bicycle for the first time - anxiously waiting to reach out and protect us from danger.  He watches us like a parent watching their child going out on a date - trusting they will be responsible.

Just as in the case of Adam we will make poor choices at times within our Christian walk. We should know when this happens God will not be there asking us "Why did you do this?" or "How could you do that?" but simply "Where are you?"

I want to encourage you to remember, God is our caring father and He is a loving parent.   He wants us to come to Him, even when we have chosen poorly, and especially when we are being tempted by the evil one to run and hide.  Let's not allow sin to get a hold of our life.  Let's get right with God and confess our sin for what it is.  Let's make it our commitment to come in agreement with His will for our life in every situation.  As we do this we will find we feel so much better, and we will be set free from the bondage of our sin.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Hebrews 4:13 what must we do with the things we have done?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you found yourself hiding from God - not wanting to spend time with Him - when you have sin in your life?

APPLICATION: Go talk to God and lay all of your garbage at His feet.  Allow Him to clean up the trash in your life. He cares and He is ready to do it now.  Why wait?

Father, thank You for caring enough to come and look for us and show Your love for us.  Thank You for forgiving me the garbage I have been a part of, and thank You for cleaning up my life.  I love You and I praise You.  Help me to identify with any area where I am holding on to something I need to let go of.  I ask these things in Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
