Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 1 Peter 5:5-6 (NKJV)

In the above scripture, Peter is instructing the younger men to submit to the older ones. The only reason he doesn’t say for women to do this is because Peter was addressing the men of the church.  But the principle is the same for all of us.

As Christians, I believe it is essential for us to learn how to be submissive or we are in for a rough road.

Q: What is submission?

Well, the first thing we should know is this; to submit to someone is not the same as obeying him or her. Submission is actually the surrendering of our will, which in turn leads us to obedience. I believe we will be amazingly blessed once we learn to humble ourselves and submit to our Lord—to His will, and His ways. Scripture is also very clear in telling us about people who allow sin to influence their decisions—they will be unwilling to submit to God or His ways.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. Romans 8:7 (NKJV)

I think we may have a hard time with the concept of submitting because we can sometimes feel as though we are losing control.  But in actuality, if we knew how big this lie was from Satan, we wouldn’t have a problem submitting to God in everything.  The way I see it you’re either submitting to God, or you’re submitting to Satan, it’s one or the other.

Once we submit ourselves to God, and we allow Him to be the Lord of our life, we won’t have a problem submitting to others because we will be doing this as an act of worship to our Lord, and as a way of respect for Him (Eph. 5:21).  Another benefit of submitting to God is we become empowered to resist the devil.

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to exchange your will for God’s today.  Let Him be “Lord” of your life. Tap into His power and His perfect plan for your life.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Peter 5:5-6, what attitude should we have towards each other?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you find it difficult at times to submit to another person, whether a friend, family member, spouse, or employer?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to not get caught up in pride.  Make a choice to submit yourself to God's will and His wisdom daily.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, I willingly submit my life to You today and I ask for You to lead me in every aspect of my life. Give me wisdom to handle each circumstance in a way to bring glory to Your Son, Jesus.  I ask this in His precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
