The Aroma of Life

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (NKJV)

It never ceases to amaze me how many fragrances there are with colognes and perfumes.  There are so many to choose from, and every year a new batch becomes available as the Hollywood stars stand in line to have their own custom fragrances manufactured to sell.  Don’t get me wrong; I think there are some great perfumes and colognes to choose from for sure.

Q: But with so many choices of fragrances to choose from, is there one that is better than the other for us to be known for?

The answer is actually, Yes! It is, the fragrance of Christ.  It’s true. We are actually told in Scripture that we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. So, to one person, this aroma we put off is actually an aroma leading to life, while to others it is an aroma of death leading to death (2 Cor. 2:15-16 NKJV). Wow!  Talk about a powerful fragrance.

So what determines whether we are an aroma of life or death?  Well, you have heard the phrase, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” and this is much the same, because life or death is in the choice of the person receiving or denying the gospel message.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: John 1:12 (NKJV)

So as we live our lives wholly submitted to God, and we abide in Him, others will be impacted to want to know Jesus—and as such we become an aroma of life to them.  For others who see Jesus in us, and yet still choose to continue to live for their own fleshly desires, we become a light exposing their dark deeds and ultimately we make up an aroma of death. This is important for us to know, because we can become lulled into complacency in our Christian walk, perhaps never realizing the impact we can have on others.

I want to encourage you today to put on the fragrance of Christ.  Seek the Lord and submit to His plan for your life.  Ask Him to lead and guide you in every aspect of your life.  Others will smell different, and it just might be the aroma of life to some.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 1:12 how many have the right to be saved (become children of God)?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you known for having the fragrance of Christ?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Keep your mind and heart fixed upon the Lord and allow Him to wash you with the water of His Word.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for washing me with the water of Your Word.  Thank You for continually cleaning the filth and smell of this world off of me.  Help me to be an aroma of life to those around me today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
